WHEN MY MOTHER was seven months pregnant with me, my parents moved to Tokyo. For a few weeks they lived in a hotel, as my father began work and my mom tried to adapt to life in a city utterly unlike Paris, where they met, and Philadelphia, where they both grew up. Those first few weeks were thrilling, sparking my mom’s obsession with the rituals and beauty of Japanese culture, but they were also terrifying. She had moved to a foreign city without even knowing where she would give birth.
