letter from the editor

CONTRIBUTORS Though he calls a small ranch in southwestern Colorado home, the New Yorker contributor admits to not being comfortable around large animals. So he was surprised to find the experience of hiking with llamas on a family trip through the San Juan Mountains intensely pleasurable. “It’s a wonderful feeling of freedom, hiking with minimal gear,” he says. Early, quiet mornings were among the highlights of the former New York Times columnist’s four-day trip through Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a pristine backcountry region with approximately two thousand lakes. “I’d climb out of the tent and watch the mist rise off the water while drinking coffee,” she recalls. “It was transcendent.” The London-based photographer found the flat, spongy landscapes of Argentina’s Iberá wetlands captivating, but he was most mesmerized by the local…

a garden isle update

STORMS HIT Kauai’s Napali Coast last spring, causing flooding and landslides that put one of the most beautiful hiking spots in all of Hawaii out of commission. After more than a year of rebuilding, the Kalalau Trail (kalalautrail.com), the legendary hiking route within the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park (dlnr.hawaii.gov), has finally reopened. Snag your permit to tackle the trail, then book your flight—this spring, Makani Kai Air introduced direct service to the North Shore from Honolulu, so you can get straight to the park without braving traffic jams from Lihue. (And with new Southwest Airlines routes from California to Oahu, plus puddle jumpers in the works, you’ll soon have even more flexibility.) For another view of the island, book with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters (bluehawaiian.com; 45-minute tours from $299). Their…

Doutzen Kroes has graced magazine covers and walked runways around the world, but she felt a new sense of purpose the first time she checked in to the safari lodge and research center Elephant Watch Camp (elephantwatchportfolio.com; doubles from $935 per person, all-inclusive) in 2015. The eco-retreat comprises six thatched-roof tents on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River in central Kenya. “It’s not just that you fall in love with the elephants—you fall in love with the conservationists, and with the families you meet,” she says. After that visit, she became the global ambassador for the anti-poaching campaign Knot on My Planet and the face of Tiffany & Co.’s Save the Wild collection of charms. All proceeds from the jewelry go to the Elephant Crisis Fund, which backs efforts…

switzerland, on two wheels

“YOU CAN NEVER GET LOST,” my guide, Ruedi, reassured me. I was about to set off along Switzerland’s Lakes Route, which meanders from Lake Geneva all the way to Germany. His maxim would repeat in my head throughout my trip—usually just after I realized I’d taken a wrong turn. But he was right: in a country so beautiful, a detour now and then isn’t so bad. Switzerland has long been a destination for serious cyclists, but the abundant train connections (and now the option of e-bikes) make it possible even for beginners. A tour operator such as Eurotrek (eurotrek.ch; four-day trips from $529) can set you up with gear, maps, and on-the-ground assistance. Contact T+L A-List travel advisor Bob Preston (bob@globebleu.com) for help planning a comprehensive Swiss itinerary that includes a…
