In the early 1990s, I was a bright-eyed sociology major at the University of California, Los Angeles, doing my best to master the art of understanding social behavior with the same tenacity I attempted to perfect the off-the-shoulder sweatshirt look (admittedly, this has never gone out of style for me). In between a busy class schedule, interning for a big film studio, and spending summers au pairing in France and teaching English in Japan, I would gallivant around the bustling streets of LA each weekend.
