For decades, the prescription of cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes has been restricted and controlled in each jurisdiction by specific regulatory frameworks. This has limited the development of clinical research and the commercialization of cannabinoids for medicinal use. On December 3, 2020, the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) recognized the medicinal properties of cannabis and removed it from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs; undoubtedly a historical fact, although its legal status varies in each country.
