The Toyota Supra is reborn through a partnership with unlikely accomplice BMW. Lexus, which found favour with large, luxury sedans, has launched a boutique crossover. The boffins at AMG deemed it a good idea to develop a four-door version of the GT supercar (but base it on E-Class underpinnings). And among them all is a Yaris hot hatch with a supercharger beneath its bonnet that’s really rather wonderful to drive… The revolution isn’t limited to peculiar partnerships and models, however. The market for electric vehicles is finally seeing the expansion we all were expecting. Following Tesla and Jaguar’s examples, the Big Three are about to launch their own electric SUVs. WHERE HAS THE FUN GONE? I’ve had the pleasure of driving and owning numerous cars, including a Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster S, Ford Focus RS and Mercedes-AMG A45. What I’ve found is, where some vehicles deliver my desired driving experience, others fail. I have affection for the sportscars of my youth and enjoy driving and searching for cars with a specific personality. With this said, I am quite fussy when it comes to cars; I want to drive and not have the car drive me. I believe many modern cars are too accomplished to be very exciting. Their performance figures are used for bragging but we can’t really use all that power on the road. This is why I’ve sold so many of my cars because most of them you can enjoy only…

After a slew of fanciful concepts, the Stuttgart luxury carmaker’s electrical vehicle branch EQ (Electric Intelligence) has unveiled its first production-ready model, the all-wheel-drive EQC. A TALE OF TWO MOTORS The EQC’s front motor has been optimised for low-to-medium speed efficiency, while the rear chimes in at higher speeds and also apportions lateral drive to oversee dynamic handling. CHARGING CHOICES EQC owners are presented with three battery charging options. The watercooled 7,4 kW onboard charger accommodates domestic power outlet charging, with Mercedes’ Wallbox charger proving three times faster. DC fast charging is the most powerful option, giving 70% charge in 40 minutes. MBUX-TENDED The EQC will play host to a version of Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with extended functionality specific to this model. SPACIOUS YET SLIPPERY The new GLE is larger than before, with a wheelbase expanded by 80 mm to a total of 2 995 mm. The larger footprint not only frees up a claimed 825 to 2 055 litres of boot space, but also ups second-row kneeroom by 69 mm and headroom by 33 mm, while an optional third row of seats is now offered. Despite being larger than its forebear, the new GLE is reportedly the most aerodynamic car in its class, with a Cd of just 0,29.
