That might sound like I’m avoiding nailing my colours to the mast, but I’m genuinely looking forward to piloting the pint-sized Peugeot 108, as much as I’m salivating at the prospect of twirling the wheel of a Ferrari 488 Pista and finding out whether BMW has scored another hit with the next 3 Series. If you’re planning to buy a set of wheels next year, don’t miss our in-depth feature beginning on page 16. Have, say, about a million burning a hole in your pocket that you’d like to spend on a new car in 2019? If you’re a movie junkie like me, you’ll recall the iconic 11-minute chase scene in Bullitt between Steve McQueen’s eponymous lieutenant in a Mustang GT Fastback and a bunch of baddies in a Dodge Charger.…

ENTRY-LEVEL ELATION I’ve always been a Mercedes-Benz fan and owned a used 2005 A170 and 2013 C180. After turning 50 last year and having never bought a brand-new car before, I treated myself to a box-fresh C180 9G-tronic. CAR has often said the entry-level model is the pick of the range and this definitely holds true for the C-Class. Travelling at 120 km/h with the engine ticking-over at well under 2 000 r/min in ninth gear is a pleasure. We embarked on an epic road trip from Durban to the Mother City and back during the December holidays. The C180’s fuel efficiency is impressive, averaging around 6,5 L/100 km for a range of more than 900 km with the air-conditioning on. As a daily driver and with fuel prices ever increasing, I have recently…

Even if you have no specific interest in a particular vehicle being tested, the article has to be well written, expertly edited, educational and entertaining. What draws our attention to reading CAR magazine in the first place are the amazing photographs. As a fellow of the Photographic Society of Southern Africa, kudos to CAR’s photographers. 67 new cars headed your way in 2019

BUDGET CAR PEUGEOT 108 Peugeot makes a return to the budget-car fold with the second-generation 108. Like its predecessor, the new car is closely related to the Toyota Aygo, sharing its platform, five-speed manual transmission and electrics. It will also use the Aygo’s 1,0-litre three-pot engine, which develops 53 kW and 93 N.m. HYUNDAI ATOS Hyundai’s long-serving i10 will make way for a new entry-level offering that revives the company’s Atos badge. Built on an all-new platform, the Atos will be powered by a 1,1-litre petrol engine coupled with a choice of manual and automated-manual ‘boxes. A driver airbag, ABS with EBD and air-conditioning should be among the standard features. SMALL HATCHBACK AUDI A1 Audi’s second-generation A1 dispenses with the three-door body shape in favour of a sole Sport-back arrangement that frees up 335 litres of boot…

PREMIUM MIDSIZE SEDAN BMW 3 SERIES The new Three is underpinned by a revised version of the 5 Series’ CLAR platform, making it markedly larger than its predecessor; growing 76 mm in length, 41 mm in the wheelbase and with front and rear tracks that have stretched by 43 and 21 mm, respectively. In fact, it’s not that much smaller than the current 5 Series. While it is bigger, the new car is also up to 55 kg lighter than its forebear and boasts an impressively slippery Cd figure of just 0,26. SHARPER SHELL BMW was never going to mess too much with the 3’s styling but the latest car has some bold new elements. Headlamps: the new units feature a more aggressively scalloped base and straked LED elements. Grille: while the signature kidney grilles remains a…
