The motoring industry is a fascinating place, don’t you agree? (It’s a confusing one, too, at times.) As evidence, take CAR’s Top 12 Best Buys awards starting on page 44. This 21-year-old competition to find South Africa’s best vehicles originally celebrated chiefly sedans and hatchbacks (and MPVs, back when the French monospace was the family car to have). This year’s competition heavily favours SUVs and crossovers. Because so many categories have been changed to reflect contemporary tastes, the only vehicle range that won an award both in 2000 and in 2020 is (spoiler alert!) the Mercedes-Benz S-Class… Which vehicle type will dominate the awards in 2040? Flying saucers? Page through our Test section and you’ll spot a change in our scoring system. Much like Top 12, this formula has evolved over…

ASPIRING JOURNALIST I am a 22-year-old living in a rural part of Limpopo. I like to read and watch car reviews and this developed into a tendency of doing mini car reviews in my mind with every car I get into. I also preach the gospel of cars (if there is such a thing) to my peers. CAR magazine influenced this as it all began back in 2012 when a friend gave me the February 2011 issue. I’ve never looked back. I try to buy every issue but sometimes miss out on a month or two due to financial reasons. I want to review cars for a living and work for an establishment like yours, but I don’t know where or how to start. Being based in the rural areas where most of…

S4 FURORE As a long-standing car enthusiast and CAR reader, I read the latest Performance Shootout issue with great interest. I currently drive an Audi S4 and consider it to be one of the most underrated cars I have ever owned (and I have owned many over the years). Visually it hides beneath the guise of a standard A4 (besides the subtle S4 badging and the not-so-subtle red brake callipers and quad exhaust). It is a four-door sedan…

BUILT IN BRAZIL The body-on-frame SUV retails for R$167 560 (±R580 000) and is available exclusively in the South American country, where it is produced in the Troller assembly line in Horizonte, Ceará. Ford Motor Company acquired the Brazilian 4x4 maker in 2007. Various advanced techniques were applied to the manufacturing process: 3D printing helped speed up the production of prototype models, while virtual reality software was used to test the vehicle’s ergonomics. Before the start of production, new investments were made in the factory and employees underwent 14 000 hours of training. BAKKIE-BASED THREE-DOOR The Troller TX4 is underpinned by the Blue Oval automaker’s familiar Ranger platform. The three-door SUV’s dimensions do, however, differ from the bakkie’s. The wheelbase is 635 mm shorter, while the deletion of a loading bay has cut the length…

Dressed in livery resembling that of the 2019 Pikes Peak record-breaking Bentley Continental GT, the Crewe automaker’s GP Ice Race car makes do with the same powertrain, supported by a 48 V mild-hybrid setup. However, in this application, the grand-tourer turned ice-racer has been upgraded – specifically for track use in sub-zero temperatures – with increased ground clearance and stance; Sparco bucket seats, replete with racing harnesses; a part-roll cage; and studded Pirelli Scorpion Ice Zero 2 tyres to ensure it’s rally ready. An Akrapovič exhaust system has been fitted, too, while Lazer high-performance LED light bars, sited behind the front grille and on the bespoke roof rack, enhance visibility. Oh, and those skis fitted to the latter item? They’re for skijoring, a competition where a skier is pulled by a…
