so this is the end

With almost ten years of DVD’s, that to a large degree, followed in the footsteps of the Leyland Brothers, and pioneers who brought their passion and love of Australia so brilliantly to our TV screens. We used the people and places we visited in every state and territory in an open and realistic way to encourage RVers to not only learn about the great outdoors but the great outback as well. Our trips have taken viewers to Cape York, the Kimberley, the red heart of Australia and the many varied and fascinating places never taught about in school. It’s often the case that we label some trips as those you should put on your bucket list, but in reality, all of them fit into this category. What has inspired us is the…

remarkable renmark

Renmark is 250km northeast of Adelaide and 150km west of Mildura. It’s the heart of the majestic riverland on the banks of the mighty Murray River. There’s so much to see, do and learn. A few days won’t be long enough to visit and enjoy what ‘river time’ (as the locals call it) is all about. Renmark has long been a must-see for grey nomads and is a great place from which to explore the wonderful Riverlands region. It suits everyone and every budget. What can you say about a desert wilderness that’s not only a magnet for RVers, but thanks to being the first irrigation settlement on the Murray, it’s become an agricultural powerhouse. Experience history of times gone by when the Murray was a river highway, transporting just about everything…

fred looks back over his time with caravan & motorhome

It’s not easy to reflect on the fabulous people, places and experiences after a decade of life on the road, and to be honest, it’s like mixing vanilla and chocolate ice cream together and then trying to separate each one again! My first memory was from when I was working with the team over at our sister publication, 4WD Action magazine. I was asked to take part in a video scenario at HQ with two prospective professional presenters. As I recall, we were to discuss on camera what was happening in real estate. Having done my bit, I left the office, and as I was descending the stairs, someone called out that I was the man. As I’d never applied for the presenter’s job, I found this more than curious,…

emerald jewel of the outback

After travelling for hundreds of kilometres through big sky country across the dry Gulf Savannah on dusty dirt roads, Boodjumulla National Park appears as a welcomed oasis in remote northwest outback Queensland. The entrance road weaves past angulated bluffs before making a dramatic entrance into the gorge through a gap in the Constance Range. This park features spectacular Lawn Hill Gorge and ancient fossils at nearby Riversleigh World Heritage Fossil Mammal Site. The beauty of Boodjamulla is stunning. Jade water flows gently between plunging ochre sandstone walls. Canoeing along it is mesmerising, and swimming in its waterfalls is thrilling. This a spectacular outback gem. As the traditional homeland of the Waanyi Aboriginal people who have inhabited the area for around 30,000 years, the park is called Boodjamulla, meaning Rainbow Serpent country. The…

how to get there

The most suitable routes for RVers are the sealed roads from Karumba in the north or Cloncurry in the south to the Burke and Wills Roadhouse on the Burke Development Road. From here, it’s a three hour drive west to Boodjamulla. The road is sealed until the Gregory Downs Hotel followed by 100km of unsealed road to the National Park. The road is well graded for around half the distance, until the Century Mine. Thereafter the quality of the road deteriorates dramatically with the added challenge of three shallow creek crossings.…
