nasty knucklehead

The weather is finally breaking—the riding season is here for most of us. As a motorcycle rider living in the Northeast, I have often wondered what it might be like to live where it is warmer year-round. Places like Florida, Texas, or Arizona. Unlike here in Connecticut. I enjoy picturing myself riding all year, the biggest question being whether I wear a long- or short-sleeve shirt under my jacket. Since I have no current plans to move, I make the most of the offseason (I hate riding on roads covered in salt and/or ice) by reading and writing about motorcycles and, when I can, getting in some quality wrench time. Yes, I enjoy going out to the garage, turning up the radio, and working on my various projects. Some of them…

six days on the road

Daytona Bike Week 2019 is a fresh memory in my mind. You may be reading this in late April, but as of this writing, Bike Week is still going full swing. I couldn’t stay for the entire week this year, as I spent the week prior to the rally getting there from 2,833 miles away. Talk about doing things the hard way. I outlined the plans for my adventure in my column in issue #371. At that point, it was but a mere glimmer in my eye. Today, however, it’s history. The adventure started in San Diego, California, and took four intrepid riders (and two almost as intrepid support truck crewmen) six days to cross the United States via what we thought would be the warmest, southernmost route from the West…

indian motorcycle unveils two limited-edition motorcycles 2019 roadmaster elite

HERE’S SOMETHING TO GET YOU hopping down to the dealer; there are only 200 Indian Roadmaster Elite models available in 2019. That’s fewer bikes than Spartans at Thermopylae. And we all saw how that turned out… Indian has drawn back the shades on yet another premium offering in its touring lineup. The 2019 Roadmaster Elite is a limited-edition bagger with exclusive accessories and amenities designed for the long haul. The 2019 Roadmaster Elite features hand-painted, custom designs with high-end add-ons. Wildfire Red Candy lies atop Black Chrystal paint, accented by the 24-karat gold leaf badging. Each of the 200 bikes takes about 30 hours to undergo this meticulous paint job. As per Indian: “The Roadmaster Elite receives an upgraded 600-watt PowerBand Audio Plus system. The high-powered system delivers exceptional sound and clarity from…

jack daniel’s indian springfield dark horse

TAKE THE FIRST REGISTERED AMERICAN distillery, Jack Daniel’s, and pair it with America’s oldest motorcycle manufacturer, and what you have is the makings of an indelible story (not to mention a wicked marketing campaign). American companies of reputable prestige are as popular as ever, as the masses shift to support those that have been doing it well for so long. Indian and Jack Daniel’s have partnered once again to build another JD-inspired limited-edition custom, enlisting none other than Brian Klock and Klock Werks Kustom Cycles. The idea behind the Springfield Dark Horse was to emulate Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select, a premium whiskey offered by the Tennessee distillery. And few things endear themselves to motorcycle maniacs quite like fabricating the objects we desire with our own hands. Jack Daniel’s is the…

harley-davidson recall on certain street 500 and 750 models

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ISSUED A RECALL on certain 2016-19 Street 500 (XG500), Street 750 (XG750), and 2017-19 Street 750A (XG750A) motorcycles. The brake calipers may corrode internally after exposure to certain driving environments such as coastal regions or road salt, resulting in increased brake drag. H-D has notified owners, and dealers will install new front and rear brake calipers free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on January 15, 2019, to notify them of the issue. Owners will receive a second notification when parts are available. Owners may contact H-D customer service at 800/258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0174.…
