harley vs indian—both are winners!

After 30 years in the motorcycle magazine business, and many years before that as a passionate enthusiast, I’ve become rather jaded. Sure, there are some great bikes, products and services introduced every year. And as the editor in chief of this magazine, I am aware of most of them—often before they are officially announced. So, after so many hyped-up new product intros, it takes something special to get me excited. Especially when it comes to a new motorcycle. Recently, two very different motorcycles broke away from the herd of “latest and greatest miracle” new motorcycles. And, as is typical of most radically different new products, they create a polarizing effect on the marketplace. Enthusiasts are going to either love them or hate them, with not many of us in the middle…

the revenge of monty hall

You can usually tell when I’m writing an Editor’s Column appealing to a segment of readership “of a certain age.” Those columns would probably begin with the words: Back in the day… I had toyed with the idea of starting this column that way, but then I realized the thing I was going to bring up from “back in the day” still exists today. So, I’m hoping everyone can follow along. I recently found myself sitting in a local diner with my wife, enjoying a Sunday morning breakfast out when I noticed something on the television set hanging on the wall. There was an episode of the game show Let’s Make A Deal on TV. This surprised me; I didn’t know that show was on the air these days! I remember it…

dr. pepper and beer nuts saved our weekend

The year was 1971, the month was October, the day was Friday. I was 16 years old and my brother Randy was 15 years old. After school, Ran and I jumped on our motorcycles and beat it home to meet up with our buddies. Everybody was there: Me on my Honda 100, my brother Randy on his Yamaha 100, Jimmy Hix on his Honda SL70, Jimmy Nelson on his Honda 125, Jim “Lippy” Wilson on his Honda 100, his brother Steve on his Honda Trail 70, Greg “Pork” Brown on his Suzuki 100, and Greg Ballenger who didn’t have a bike because his Mama didn’t like motorcycles and she didn’t like us! We decided that we were all going to pool our money so that we could buy some beer and…

Brave New World(?) I get up Saturday and head to the kitchen for a cup of coffee when my wife tells me the shocking news: Peter Fonda has died! He was 79. Dang! I’m only 75! She then hands me the newly arrived Issue #379. On the front cover is Harley-Davidson’s electric LiveWire. No more rumbling, loud, noisy pipes and smelly carbon monoxide exhaust. A far, far cry from Easy Rider’s Wyatt and Billy riding across the country on their Harley Panheads, representing freedom. “They” won! One consolation to Issue #379 is the feature on Buzz Kanter’s 1936 Harley EL—Awesome! David RivasFranklin, IL Short and Sweet Thanks again for the great magazine. Happy Fourth of July. Bill & Julie NesbittSpokane, WA Last Man Standing I’m not very far into your Issue #379, and it already pushed several of my…
