in praise of used motorcycles

Starting with our last issue, I have been sharing my experience of buying a well-used Harley bagger on the internet some 1,500 miles away from me. I called the experience The Beer Budget Bagger Tour, as the low “beer budget” price for these Harley Electra Glide Classics is a fraction of the champagne prices of a similar new Harley. Ready to ride and priced under $5,000 each, they are within reach for most of us. My riding partner, Paul Ousey (he bought one too), and I have been sharing some of the experiences online and they seem to be quite popular. My guess is that, for many of us, the dream of buying a brand-new motorcycle is just that: A dream. Especially for expensive touring models. Who wouldn’t want to throw…

Motorcycle trade shows are fun! I’ve been attending them since even before starting here at American Iron some 15 years ago. Back then, there were several during the year: The Cinci V-Twin show, The Indy Dealer Show, International Motorcycle Show series, and even motorcycle rallies like Americade prided itself on presenting a midway packed with accessory manufacturers. Some events were dealer-only, and some were open to the public. A few years back, a new motorcycle trade show was announced. The American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) was conceived to emulate the motorcycle trade shows of Europe. Over there it is common for trade shows to be the launching point for the OEMs to make new model announcements, offer dealers and media sneak peeks at new accessories, and have an element where the…

I WORK AT PLATINUM POWERSPORTS and have operated this independent shop for over 20 years now. In that time, I have seen a number of changes in technology, riders, and their bikes. We fix all brands of machines from cruiser to sport to touring to race. Over the past couple of years, I have listened to the CEOs of Polaris and Harley talk of the need to get new riders into the sport that we love. They are working hard to help solve the situation. Two years ago, the CEOs of both companies spoke passionately about their love of riding to a group of dealers who all had similar feelings. We all understood the importance of the situation but still lacked the tools to help. Harley has initiated their new Riders’…

indian comes out swingin’

The Challenger Makes Its Debut THE BAR FOR AMERICAN TOURING MOTORCYCLES has officially been elevated. Indian Motorcycle has redefined the American bagger with its introduction of the 2020 Indian Challenger—a striking combination of American muscle, next-level technology, and premium comfort to deliver a truly high-performance, fully-loaded bagger. It all starts with the all-new Indian PowerPlus engine, Indian’s first liquid-cooled large displacement motor (108 cubic-inch, 60-degree V-twin) that packs 122 horsepower and 128 ft-lbs. of torque. The new powertrain also features a six-speed transmission with true overdrive, assist clutch to reduce clutch effort, and hydraulic valve lash adjusters and camshaft chain tensioners for a low-maintenance, reliable powerplant. The PowerPlus’s overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder deliver incredible V-twin performance and power. Riders can customize the bike’s throttle mapping by selecting one of…
