welcome

Art is a soothing balm and pleasant distraction in uncertain times. In between pulling together this issue from my makeshift kitchen office, I’ve been painting the plants on my windowsill, swooning over old Matisse exhibition catalogues, framing new prints, reading Olivia Laing’s Funny Weather, and listening to Peter Keegan and Laura Boswell’s Ask An Artist podcast. What artistic delights have you been enjoying? Please write and share your recommendations! Of course, the lockdown means studio visits are off the cards for now, so our “In The Studio” slot is replaced this month with a BP Portrait Award special, looking in depth at the three artworks shortlisted for this year’s competition. Our interviews were completed before the results were announced, so upon hearing Jiab Prachakul had won, I emailed to congratulate her.…

YOUNG AT ART I’ve been subscribing to your magazine for three years now and can hardly wait for its arrival on the doormat every month. It really keeps me on track and helps motivate me when so many things in life make it difficult to focus on our own creative work. As a schoolteacher of infant classes, I've written and attempted to illustrate my own stories and thoroughly enjoyed your recent interview with Quentin Blake. I am always looking for hints and tips from the greats of children's illustration. I wonder whether you would be able to interview a few others? Gwen Bowie, via email Thanks for your email, Gwen. Turn to page 20 for our special on illustrating for kids with Robyn Wilson-Owen and Allison Colpoys. AT HOME IN WATER I really enjoyed reading this…

You asked in your June edition for readers to tell you what we are doing during lockdown. My painting buddy Philippa, who lives next door, and I have joined Roos Schuring’s challenge to paint 20 floral paintings in 30 days. Normally, when the sun is shining and the air warm, we would be out and about painting en plein air in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, but coronavirus has put paid to all that and so we joined this challenge to keep us active, painting and sharing experiences, albeit at the correct social distance! We decided that, rather than stack these paintings in our studios, we would sell them to our friends and neighbours in our village to raise money for our beleaguered NHS charities, a small token of our appreciation for…

Esiri Erheriene-Essi There’s a wonderful nostalgia to the paintings of Esiri Erheriene-Essi. She scours everything from flea markets to museum archives for her source material, as she searches for “something very specific that captures my attention and activates my imagination”. Her interest in harnessing the power of history stems back to her BA in Media Studies at the University of East London, reading the essays of James Baldwin. “He talked a lot about history and how reading the words of others that had come before him made him feel less alone and I guess that always stayed with me,” she says. Her focus is on imagery from the African diaspora and her aim is to “not just to document the world as it is” but rather “depict the world as I want…
