welcome

In these strange times in which we find ourselves living, getting out for a drive in your BMW might well have become more important to you than ever before. For many, taking a drive to nowhere in particular has long been good for the mind – a trick to blow away the cobwebs and reset the brain by enjoying one of life’s little pleasures. It is those simple things that have grown in importance during the global health crisis. On that note in this issue we grab the keys to a stunning 2002tii – once a UK car now resident in South Africa – for a blast along some glorious routes honouring a iconic classic model which just so happens to celebrate its 50th birthday in 2021 – page 10. Available for all BMW and MINI vehicles of any age, the free service is an industry first and provides drivers with important assistance and guidance in the aftermath of an accident via vehicle recovery, repair and facilitating onwards travel. corner chaser

Touring Car Racing and Sports Cars by Stefan Knittel. The name of the book the owner of this 1973 BMW 2002tii lent me a few months before this planned shoot and drive of his BMW. The timing was perfect, COVID-19 Lockdown affording me ample time to dig deep into my motoring books at the start of 2020. I’m familiar with the basics of BMW’s illustrious racing history, but this book goes back to the very beginning and shares all the important highlights of each model and series through the decades. One thing is clear; BMW proudly stands shoulder to shoulder with any of the other sporting manufacturers’ achievements. Pictures of Hans-Joachim Stuck with one wheel in the air are etched in our minds and so is another picture, published in this…

agility trial

In the mid-1980s BMW employee Max Reisböck wanted to take his family on holiday. A dilemma familiar to anyone the world over with a large ménage of their own, Reisböck realised that he’d struggle to fit his family and all of their various bits and bobs in the boot of his E30 3 Series saloon – more space was required for his annual leave this time, and in future. The trained bodywork engineer set to work on the common problem with a somewhat drastic solution – one we don’t recommend you try at home. He cut the C-pillar clean off his car and shifted it rearwards, in doing so Reisböck created the first-ever BMW estate car and the rest, as they say, is history. Forty years on from that moment, and…
