Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin’s team of three supercharged 41/2 Litre Bentleys roars away from the start of the 1930 RAC Tourist Trophy at Ards, near Belfast, with Bertie Kensington Moir in YU 3250 (car no 2) getting the jump on Dudley Benjafield (3) and Birkin (1). Competing in his first race since 1925, as a late replacement after original pilot Beris Harcourt-Wood fell ill, the 17-stone, 56-year-old Kensington Moir appreciated the width of the long-chassis YU 3250 (see p112), now famed as the first of the ‘Blowers. He came home a creditable 11th, at a 63.78mph average, after team leader Birkin spectacularly crashed out.…

The ages of Bentley make for fascinating reading. Right from its foundation under Walter Owen ‘WO’ Bentley on 10 July 1919, it became responsible for countless heroic tales of derring-do, when racing was everything and winning swiftly became a habit for the mighty machines from Cricklewoood. Times weren’t always easy, of course.WO didn’t have much fun after his firm was acquired by Rolls-Royce in 1931, and left to join Lagonda. The early years at Derby and later Crewe under R-R control went well, with important cars such as the Continentals arriving as craftsmanship and luxury joined the founder’s tenets of speed, quality and competition success. niki lauda 1949-2019

Niki Lauda, three-time Formula One World Champion and titan of the sport, died at the age of 70 on 20 May 2019. The Austrian, who spent two months in hospital following a lung transplant last year, passed away peacefully. His was a life that merged with fiction, as Ron Howard’s depiction of his rivalry and friendship with James Hunt hit Hollywood in Rush. But his real story was more than worthy of the silver screen. In 1976 he survived a fiery crash at the Nürburgring that should have taken the life of the reigning World Champion and then championship leader, at a time when tragedy was still a common feature of F1. classics seek the youth vote

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs revealed the results of its 2019 National Cost of Ownership Survey on 14 May at the Palace of Westminster. The Federation traditionally conducts a major survey every five years, but, with the next not due until 2021, chairman David Whale felt that an interim report on the health of the British historic vehicle movement was necessary “in the light of the demands and pressures on enthusiasts”. A summary of its findings was presented by FBHVC research director Paul Chasney and Jon Downer of JDA Research, which conducted the survey. The work took place in two parts, first investigating national behaviours and attitudes towards the movement, before polling classic enthusiasts on costs of ownership.
