“where are we?”

When I still lived with my parents, we’d usually leave for our annual camping holiday in the winter. Every June, the Jonkers of Hennenman loaded their Gypsey 5, hitched it to the Kombi and hit the road to usually (and mercifully) one of the country’s warmer regions. My parents folded down the Kombi’s back seats and fashioned a bed for us kids – four brothers and one baby sister – so we could sleep as we left the icy Free State in the early hours of the morning. I will always remember how the noise of the Kombi’s V6 engine and the sun shining through the window would wake me up somewhere along the way. “Where are we?” I would ask with a yawn, and the answer…

winning letter

Morkel and Elfriede win a cooler bag worth R220. Whether you’re a camper, fisherman or sports fan next to a cricket pitch, this cooler bag has room for luch box and a 1,5 ℓ cooldrink bottle. The lid also has space for a coffee flask. The interior is lined with PVC which makes it easy to keep this bag clean and hygenic. The bag has a short strap that reaches over the top and attaches with a Velcro strip, and also a longer shoulder strap if you’re going to carry it over longer distances. It’s an ideal picnic accessory or a padkos bag for a road trip. …

HELLO, NEIGHBOUR! We are pensioners who, together with our friends Danie and Lenore Joubert, undertook a three-week tour of the Karoo and Cederberg. The small towns of the Northern Cape – including Williston, Carnarvon, Calvinia and many others – are beautifully clean with friendly people who make tourists feel welcome. Loxton with its Rooi Granaat coffee shop as well as the tiny Middelpos with its old-fashioned charm are some of the hidden gems. Sutherland and the Tankwa Karoo National Park were a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list. The stargazing evening with Jurg Wagener at the Sterland campsite once again made us realise the grandeur of the immeasurable universe. And if only to eat Karoo lamb chops at the Whitehouse Inn in town again,…

safety checks and balances

Although modern vehicles come equipped with features such as anti-sway control, stabilisers are clearly not a thing of the past as far as our Facebook friends are concerned. But not everyone seems to agree. Morne Eloff I tow a Jurgens Fleetline with a Ford Ranger 3.0 TDCI 4x4 auto. I use a stabiliser for long trips, but seldom for short distances. Not that there’s going  to be a difference, but it’s the right thing to do. Even if you don’t feel that it’s necessary. Jaco Nortje I hitch a Jurgens Penta to my Toyota Fortuner. I was very glad that I still use a Tando after we lost a wheel on the Penta and it handled the  combination with 100 % stability. Follow…

engine size vs performance

Whenever I travel to Cape Town for business, I get an opportunity to drive something other than a 4x4 vehicle for a couple of days.On my last trip, having collected the keys for a brand-new VW Polo TSI from the rental company, I was immediately struck by its abundant performance and the pleasing gruff engine note when accelerating away from the traffic lights. The acceleration was so quick, I had to take care not to spin the front wheels. I did a little reading up and the Internet revealed to me that this fine little car only has a 1,0 ℓ three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine. It performed more like a hot 2,0 ℓ. Even more surprising was the fact that after three days of scurrying around the peninsula, the fuel…
