As I was packing my rent-a-Gladiator for the Jp Dirt ’N Drive event, I realized that I had enough trailspace to do whatever I needed. Of course, I just dreamed up that word: trailspace. I am a writer, and we are obliged to invent words that have true meaning—especially in Jeepdom. Like many other words, trailspace actually has some dual meanings. This definition concerns how much room you have to pack all your essential items into your Jeep before you head out on the trail. Soon after reading that letter, I found an article in Cruisin’ News (a Northern California–based car culture mag I read) about the importance of having full replacement value coverage, and got a bill for the insurance renewal for my ’79 Jeep J-10 (a 5-year ongoing restomod nearing completion) from Grundy Insurance. They specialize in classic and specialized vehicles. With about $100k invested in the project, I settled on $75k comp/collision coverage with a $500 deductible and $550k liability, for close to what I pay for my ’08 BMW 328i. The purpose is to increase Jeep and Ram capacity, “including production of two new Jeep-branded white space products.” This includes $1.6 billion for the two plants within the Mack Avenue Engine Complex for the next-gen Grand Cherokee, a new three-row fullsize Jeep (in addition to the Grand Wagoneer), and the plug-in hybrid Jeep models.
