let’s go outside

IT’S THAT time of the year again when the sun is about as reliable as the electrics on a modern Land Rover. Yep, winter has finally arrived. A few years ago Land Rover ran their #hibernot campaign during the cold, wet winter months. It was about encouraging its owners and admirers to embrace all things winter. Easier said than done for most mere mortals, but for Land Rover drivers there should be no excuse because snow, freezing rain or sleet should not stop your ability to get out. All you need to do is make sure that your lights, battery, wipers and tyres are up to the task and off you go. Our cover feature is an interview with the likeable Land Rover brand ambassador Kenton Cool, no-one in the UK has…

twisted make plans for its last defenders

IN EARLY 2016, Twisted Automotive bought 240 of the final batch of Defenders, at a cost of £7.5 million, as Jaguar Land Rover ceased production of the model. Specialising in re-engineering the original Defender vehicle to the exacting requirements of customers from around the world, Twisted’s mission is to take the iconic 4x4 and keep the spirit of Land Rover’s rich heritage alive. Its penultimate batch of 44 will be released on January 29 – exactly three years since the end of production – under new Twisted branding, ‘Remake History’. They will be built to a high specification. Twisted’s final 36 vehicles – the only batch to exist worldwide – will then be released to existing Twisted owners under the brand ‘Make History’ at the end of 2019. All nine original Land…

news bites

INEOS speak out FOLLOWING INCREASED speculation in the press about INEOS’s upcoming choice of manufacturing location for its new off-road vehicle, the company has responded with a statement. Of particular concern for them was a confidential letter from cabinet ministers to INEOS that was leaked to a BBC reporter, forming the basis of an online article titled ‘Ford Bridgend: INEOS off-road car decision expected’. INEOS claim that the leak came from inside UK government in an attempt to influence the outcome of their evaluations. Dirk Heilmann, CEO of INEOS Automotive and leader of Projekt Grenadier, commented: “We plan to make our choice on manufacturing location by the end of the year. We are not taking it lightly because it is pivotal – for our business, and for the local communities that would…

curing motion sickness

ACCORDING TO Wellness Technology Researcher Spencer Salter at Jaguar Land Rover, motion sickness affects over 70 per cent of people, and until now little has been known about the causes and how to mitigate them. After collecting 15,000 miles of motion sickness data, however, which included the effects caused by performing a task while in transit, like checking emails, JLR has been able to create an algorithm that generates a ‘wellness score’. This calculates how susceptible individual drivers and passengers are to feeling car sick, using biometric sensors that record physiological signals. Combining this with motion and dynamics data, the vehicle will reliably know when a passenger or driver is becoming motion sick before they do and adapt its dynamics and cabin settings to suit. As we move towards an autonomous future where…

ben fogle turns to exmoor trim

REMEMBER BEN Fogle’s Icon 90 soft top from the April 2016 issue? That was almost three years ago, and as Ben’s main family vehicle that’s obviously enough time to warrant a makeover. To get the job done he turned to Williton-based Exmoor Trim who fitted a classic Evander Wood Rim steering wheel with a slimline boss kit and a new canvas. Exmoor Trim worked with Ben on hand-making a bespoke ‘stayfast’ high-tech oyster and tan cover upgrading from Tennax fasteners to belt rails. The adventurer was delighted with the changes: “My thanks to Exmoor Trim for the beautiful new canopy on my Land Rover. She looks amazing!”…
