technology overload

AS children, we used to marvel at the vehicles in TV shows and movies like Knight Rider and James Bond, not because they looked great or were extremely fast, but because of all the cool technology in these cars. Who didn’t need a talking car that could drop oil slicks at will and gun down pursuers before driving underwater? The passenger ejection seat was definitely my favourite.Weapons aside, cars like that have now become a reality. Take Haval’s Vision 2025, for example. It unlocks via facial recognition and has a summoning function, which means the car can meet you wherever you want.Think about your first car. Mine had an FM radio, buttons for the lights, wipers and hazards and manual heater controls. Ventilation was via the efficient quarter vent window. These…

bakkie conundrum

WINNING LETTERCongratulations! Your letter wins you a Little Luxury Luxpure filter unit. We will be in contact to arrange delivery of your prize.I’m looking to replace my pre 2015 Ford Ranger and have some questions. I’ve looked at the Amarok, Hilux and Ranger but obviously there’s the facelifted Ranger coming. The Amarok is amazing but most expensive by some margin. In my opinion, the Hilux is good but lags the Ranger in ‘cabin comfort’ and electronics/infotainment system. My current Ranger has taken me through some tough terrain and has performed beautifully. My only complaint is that my 3.2 auto is a bit thirsty.Do you know when the facelifted Ranger will be launched in SA and will the new 2.0 bi-turbo Ranger be up to towing a fair-sized boat? The thinking here…

how to stop a cruiser

Johan Badenhorst is probably South Africa’s best-known overlander, with his amazing adventures televised on SABC2. He also knows a lot about patience – probably the best attribute if you plan on travelling the African continent. You’ve spent thousands on your new Toyota Land Cruiser, making it the perfect safari vehicle. You have the suspension, the bull bar, winch, dual battery system, fridge, drawer system, roof-top tent, shower, geyser, larger wheels and tyres but perhaps you have missed the most important part. With all the added weight and bigger wheels, will you be able to stop in an emergency? The braking system plays a vital role in the safe operation of any vehicle, but a by-product of this process is heat. The two variables that influence how much heat is generated under braking…

expedition chow: imodium and goat

Kingsley Holgate is South Africa’s most famous adventurer, a renowned humanitarian and author. The 73-year-old founded the Kingsley Holgate Foundation, which aims to “save and improve lives through adventure”. He has handed out thousands of mosquito nets to help save people from malaria and more recently, provided people who are sight-impaired with glasses. Although he’s driven other brands over the years, he now won’t drive anything but a Land Rover. Mind you, the All New Discovery is rather comfy.Tailgate Café lunches are a Holgate expedition tradition.En route to sail the massive, dry salt lake of Chew Bahir in southern Ethiopia a couple of years ago, a motoring journalist asked if he could travel in the Land Rover with me. “I want to do a bit of a story on expedition…
