treasure the memories

As a new mom, lying in the hospital bed after a difficult birth, and grappling with the challenge of getting my daughter to latch, I remember one of the nursing sisters in the ward telling me to “just relax” and enjoy my precious little bundle while she was so tiny because all too soon she’d be a robust teen asking to borrow my car! At the time, I confess I thought she was a bit mad. After all, my baby was only a day old. Of course she was right, and as I look at my rapidly growing children, I can’t help but get a bit misty-eyed for all that has gone by. Make no mistake. Being the parent of a newborn is hard work. For first-timers especially it can be…

you said it...

My journey with twins Every doctor I saw told me twins are usually delivered early and need to spend some time in the NICU, so this is what I physically and mentally prepared myself for. I barely packed a hospital bag for the twins, because I thought they would only need a nappy and hat in the NICU. My journey started in December 2017 when I went for my first scan and was told I’m expecting twins. My husband and I were super excited, but then our doctor made us aware of all the risks involved (preterm labour, preeclampsia and postnatal depression to name a few). From that day on, I knew I had to do everything possible to protect my babies. My doctor was amazing and played a huge role in…

pregnancy notes

Parental leave President Cyril Ramaphosa officially signed the Labour Laws Amendment Bill into law last year. Essentially, the new Act states any employee who wasn’t entitled to maternity leave will now be permitted to take 10 days of parental leave, which will be paid out of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). The Act also covers adoption leave and commissioning parental leave. A single parent – irrespective of gender – of a child under the age of two is allowed 10 consecutive days of parental leave, and if there are two adoptive parents, one will be entitled to adoption leave and the other to parental leave of 10 days. The same provision is made for commissioning parents in a surrogate motherhood agreement. “The law needs to develop further to give parents a choice about…

the stuff of dreams

Finally drifted off to sleep, only to awake with a start because in dreamland you’ve just given birth to a litter of mewing kittens? If giving your partner a rundown of the crazy goings-on of your sleepy subconscious mind has become part of your morning routine since you’ve been with bump, you’ll be glad to know this is all perfectly normal. And it’s no coincidence, either. “I hear a lot of women saying their dreams are transformed during pregnancy,” says psychologist Jessica Lara-Carrasco. Whether you’re dreaming of booties and chubby little cheeks, or having rather darker night-time mind wanderings, you’re certainly not alone. Increased waking Of course, dreams happen when we’re asleep, but you know better than anyone that good slumber is harder to come by now you’re pregnant. The quality of…
