happy new year!

I love this time of year. It brings fresh hope of a squeaky-clean new year and the chance to breathe new life into tired tasks and routines. Of course, if you’ve recently had a baby, the new year will be unlike any other. You see, nothing changes you, or your relationships, the way babies do. And no matter how much advice your mother-in-law gives you, nothing can prepare you for it. In fact, you’ll be surprised to discover your hidden depths. Yes, you expect to miss the parties, the trips, the expensive restaurant meals. But more often than not, you'll find you actually prefer the sweet smell of your baby’s breath or the gentle rhythmic breathing of your sleeping baby. There are other equally delightful discoveries. The milky way “Oh, my! Are yours till breastfeeding? Aren’t you worried about having ‘tea-bag breast’? Why are you doing this?” What was supposed to be a quick breast pad change turned into a pop quiz when I ran into two colleagues in the ladies’ room at work. This isn’t the first time I’ve been bombarded with questions like these - usually accompanied by a look of pity. My baby is almost two, I work full-time, I’m still breastfeeding, and I love it. I used to have perky breasts, but they have now been replaced by ‘milk cartons’ that are marred by stretch marks and tiny crescent marks left by my baby’s tugging and pinching during feeding, but I love them. “My friend got me a six-week supply of gourmet frozen meals so every day I just had to pop it in the oven and not worry about cooking or preparing dinner. It was the best.” Kaylee Sekgaolelo “A medicine kit including Sterimar Nasal Spray, Woodward’s gripe water, Telament colic drops, Bon baby massage oil, 1ml syringes, etc.” Shannon Dommett “Vouchers from Baby City and Dis-Chem, the mom’s choice of nappies, wet wipes and bum cream.” Minette Groenewald “Definitely a hamper for mom, consisting of bubble bath, a face mask, primer, lip balm, hand cream, perfume, lipstick, exotic flavoured teas and pyjamas. Everyone thinks about gifts for the baby, but new moms need some spoiling, too. You tend to forget about yourself the first few months after your baby is born and need a…

My wish for 2019 New Year’s resolutions are a wonderfully positive way to start the year. As a new mom, I’ve found that putting plans in place, and being proactive and target driven is the best way to achieve the vision I have for my family, so this is the perfect time of year to put these goals in place. It’s essential to know what you want to achieve, so if life throws you some damp nappies, you have something positive to focus on as motivation to keep going. Your resolutions can act as the foundation for the rest of the year. Phindile Sithole…
