editor’s note

As the world of social media and ‘digital’ continues to take up a greater portion of our lives, it’s been interesting for someone in my position to observe its influence on men’s fashion. When we started our annual Men Of Style list seven years ago, Instagram had only just been launched and would take another year or so to begin its journey towards being the behemoth social platform it is today. The addition of Snapchat et al in the intervening years has created even more forums for people to share their lives. The effect of all this ‘social’ is evident as we introduce this year’s Men of Style list beginning on page 110. There is a considerable and growing number of young men in Australia who are now more keen to show…

BLACK AND WHITE What an amazing issue [Winter 2016] with two articles that provide insights into the why and who of the fight in Afghanistan and the men and women at the sharp end. The atrocities of ISIS are a blight on humanity and cannot be left to fester and grow across the world. At the same time we need to know how our brave defence forces are suffering due to the inevitable injury and death that fighting a war brings. Heroes is a word used too often but in this case they deserve it for the way they go about an horrendous task. Michael Matthews, via e-mail HANDED DOWN I’m an 80-year-old grandfather of two boys 22 and 18 years old (among others). For the past two years I’ve bought Men’s Style before…

June 2016, Florence CARTIER During Pitti Uomo in June, Cartier launched the latest timepiece in its famous family of watches – the Drive de Cartier – at the Palazzo Gondi in Florence. The Maison created a Drive Man’s apartment, with a dressing room, library, drawing room and studio, and over three days the apartment became a regular meeting place for men attending Pitti as DJs, special entertainment and cocktails filled the Palazzo – it was the place to be and enabled all the fashionable men in Florence during Pitti to network, exchange ideas and of course, take a closer look at the new Drive de Cartier. July 2016, Sydney BELL & ROSS The luxury French watch brand injected bon vivant into Bastille Day by hosting an exclusive dinner to unveil the Baselworld Collection for Bell…

She’s only 31 but it feels like Delta Goodrem has been part of our lives for a very long time. That feeling must be explained by the fact she was signed to Sony at the age of 15 and then, just a couple of years later, became a household name in this country when she played Nina Tucker on iconic Aussie soap Neighbours. The television role was the springboard to launch her career in her true passion, music. That happened with the release of Innocent Eyes in 2003, which sold more than four million copies around the world and remains one of the highest selling albums of all time in Australia. In the midst of such stellar success, Delta’s life then took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’ lymphoma.…

the new guy

‘Doing stand-up is the place I’m the most afraid and the most fulfilled.’ Last year Trevor Noah seemed to come out of nowhere to take over as host of The Daily Show from veteran funnyman Jon Stewart. But the South African comedian, born of an illegal mixed-race marriage and raised in the Soweto township, had already enjoyed a meteoric rise in his homeland before becoming the first African stand-up to play The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in 2012. From there he appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman and did correspondent spots on The Daily Show. Since filling Jon Stewart’s shoes, the 32-year-old has proved a likeable and witty anchor in the face of media sniping that he’s not edgy enough. Are you looking forward to hitting Australia again? I’m super…

meeting of the tribes

leeoliveira.com In many ways the informal fashion parade outside famous annual fashion trade show Pitti Uomo has become almost as important as anything that happens inside the venue. You could argue it sets the tone for men’s dressing for the year to come. Or you could also argue it’s a unique, one-off occasion in which men converge on Florence to sit on a crappy old pebblecrete wall while displaying their carefully chosen A-game, fashion-wise. Either way, it’s a fascinating mix of peacocks, preeners and the properly dressed, with this year’s instalment displaying a fondness for bold colours, bold prints, and bold stripes and checks. Suiting was most definitely ‘statement’ and separates favoured the eye-catching blazer with bright white pants and loafers option. Sunnies and general eyewear, as ever, a key accessory. What do you think,…
