editor’s note

On page 26 of this issue we look back at 10 years of our Men Of Influence list, an annual snapshot of Australian-based guys who are working hard and making a mark in their chosen field or profession. It’s always an interesting exercise to look back over the lists and see how many of those we’ve included have continued a skyward career trajectory, while others have either embraced anonymity once more or suffered various career setbacks (usually the politicians). Happily there are far more of the former than the latter, some of whom we detail in the aforementioned story. The first thing many of those we contact about being included on our list ask is whether this is one of their friends pranking them. It must be the concept of being ‘influential’…

DAN THE MAN I enjoyed the cover shoot and story on Daniel Ricciardo [Autumn, 2017] – he seems like one of the most likeable chaps in international sport, always with a big smile on his face (you could have got him to smile a little more!)It’s a pity he couldn’t back up his Men’s Style covershoot with a winning performance in Melbourne but I’ve no doubt we’ll see him atop the podium many times in the coming years. Jacey Sergeant, Albury, NSW GOOD FOR WHAT ALES YOU Your story on modern health problems – many caused by technology – had me worried that I either had or am very likely to get all of them, from too much screen time to ear-bud related hearing loss and new age back pain. The only solution was…

See Van Gogh And The Sea sons ~The largest-ever Vincent Van Gogh exhibition to be held in Australia, Van Gogh and the Seasons, is on now at Melbourne’s NGV International until July 9. Launched in Melbourne by the painter's great-grandnieces Josien van Gogh and Sylvia Cramer, the exhibition includes nearly 50 artworks by the troubled genius, who took his own life in 1890 at age 37. Even now, the works remain breathtakingly beautiful. The exhibition is accompanied by a major video installation that depicts the life of Van Gogh, narrated by David Stratton and featuring the voice of actor David Wenham. www.ngv.vic.gov.au Shop Mr Porter/ Kingsman ~The leading men's e-tailer and filmmaker Matthew Vaughn have announced a second ‘costume to collection’ collaboration of menswear label, Kingsman, developed and inspired by Kingsman: The Golden…

March 2017, Basel HUBLOT To celebrate its new releases Hublot staged one of the biggest parties held during Baselworld in March. The brand’s ongoing partnership with Ferrari, celebrating the Prancing Horse’s 70th anniversary with the limited edition Techframe timepiece, took centre stage before a surprise VIP performance by UK electronic rock legends Depeche Mode ended the night. The band joined with Hublot to support the Charity Water organisation bringing clean drinking water to developing countries. March 2017, Sydney FENDI The opening of Italian luxury house FENDI’s new Westfield CBD boutique in Sydney brought out a high-powered list of local celebrities, welcomed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, Creative Director for Accessories, Menswear and Kidswear, and Pietro Beccari, Chairman and CEO, who both travelled from Rome for the opening. A custom menu by Bennelong’s Peter Gilmore was enjoyed…

talent will out

We can imagine acting as a career wasn’t exactly embraced with open arms by the family of in-demand actress Alexandra Daddario, currently on our screens in the Baywatch remake with The Rock and cover star Zac Efron. That’s because she’s the daughter of two high-powered New York lawyers and the grand-daughter of an ex Congressman. But in fact the blue-eyed brunette, who has half a dozen films finished or in production, found them entirely supportive. “I think my parents saw that acting ultimately made me happy, even though it was a rough ride for a little bit,” she’s said. “There wasn’t a ton of pushback.” Just as well, because after starting off in TV soaps such as All My Children in her late teens, Daddario has added an impressive list of roles…

lapo elkann

‘The real beauty of it is that there are no rules. It’s a matter of: do you have confidence?’ We’ve always resisted putting the enigmatic Mr Elkann on this page because he’s something of a predictable inclusion on “men’s fashion icon” lists all over the world, thanks to a love of Italian tailoring, statement eyewear and a playboy lifestyle that has famously veered out of control on a couple of occasions. But after Men’s Style had the brief opportunity to meet the man himself at Baselworld recently, we couldn’t resist. At the world’s largest watches trade fair to promote his partnership with Hublot via his new Italia Independent Classic Fusion collection, Elkann was typically dapper as he posed for photos and conducted endless back-to-back interviews in the company of his personal tailor…
