one in a million!

Freddie has always been creative. And when he was seven, he was shown the world of coding by a friend. Immediately, he connected with it and slowly he built his skills. And soon, he realised the potential coding had. His great-aunt Pat, 89, lives at home with dementia. Freddie saw she was struggling with day-to-day living, such as opening and closing a door, so he came up a bright idea. ‘I’m going to create a facial recognition door entry system,’ he told me one day, and that’s exactly what he did. As part of the coding club at his primary school, he built and adapted his skills to be able to make one. Then, one day in 2018, I saw The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers tweet about their competition. ‘Why don’t you enter with your Door Pi…

your pick me ups

Good deed of the week An award-winning Surrey based care home group, CHD Living, has digitised its ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ campaign and is calling for additional ‘virtual volunteers’ amidst the ongoing Coronavirus crisis, in efforts to continue providing their elderly residents with companionship during this difficult time. Drawings, letters and poetry from the public are also being…

our light loved and lost

Lorna Wells, 44, from New Forest, loves her son more than any one in the world Dear Aaron, From the moment I found out I was pregnant with you, I was in love. I’ve never loved anything the way I loved you. And sure enough, from the moment you were born, I was in awe. Whilst you were growing up, we did everything together. From cuddling up on the sofa and watching a film of an evening, to going to WWE tournaments together. And when you discovered your love of football at six, I was at every match – spurring you on from the sidelines. You may have been our only child, but you were everything we needed. You were such a funny kid – always smiling and play fighting with me and your dad, Tony, 56. And you kept…
