Van Halen once gave me a guitar lesson at his Los Angeles home, showing me how to play his favourite riff from 1984 classic Drop Dead Legs. Frankly, the maestro was wasting his time. I wouldn’t be able to play that riff with eight arms, but the gesture was appreciated. Not least because, at the time, I knew something he didn’t, namely that the publication I worked for had just declared his latest album, Van Halen III, “shit”. Sorry Eddie. By way of a belated apology then, it’s a pleasure to welcome the mighty Van Halen to the cover of PR issue 14. Elsewhere, we shoot the breeze with British rock institutions David Coverdale and Geezer Butler, talk punk rock with Duff McKagan, recall the dark wit of Led Zeppelin/Bad…

THE BIG PICTURE STANDING ON THE roof of a Brooklyn recording studio, a Resonator guitar in his hand, Tyler Bryant looks across the New York skyline. “New York used to make me sick,” he admits. “Don’t get me wrong, I love this city, but the first five times I came here I got physically ill. I grew up in the country, so New York felt so claustrophobic to me, so overwhelming. But now we’ve made some great memories here… and a great new record.” Truth And Lies, the follow up to Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown’s self-titled 2017 album, is one of the most eagerly anticipated rock albums of the year. Recorded in just two weeks at Studio G in Williamsburg, New York with producer Joel Hamilton (Black Keys/Highly Suspect), the 13-track set…

PAUL RAYMOND, UFO’s long-serving keyboard player and rhythm guitarist, has died of a heart attack, aged 73. After playing with the blues bands Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack, Raymond joined UFO in 1976 and made his debut on the following year’s Lights Out album. During his first stint with UFO, he co-wrote several songs including Just Another Suicide, Lookin’ Out For No. 1 and Ain’t No Baby. He quit in 1981 to join the newly-formed Michael Schenker Group and, briefly, Waysted, before re-joining UFO for a shortlived mid-’80s reunion. Raymond returned in the 1990s and had been regularly recording and touring with UFO since 2003. A week before his passing, he played with the band at a triumphant farewell show in London, on their Last Orders 50th Anniversary tour.…

IRISH-BORN guitarist Bernie Torme, who has died of viral pneumonia, aged 66, was best known for his work with Gillan and, briefly, Ozzy Osbourne. Tormé toured with Ozzy immediately after guitarist Randy Rhoads’ death in 1982, and went on to work with Dee Snider and his own group, Tormé. At the time of his death, he was recording with former Gillan bassist John McCoy in the trio GMT.…
