is it hot in here?!

Summer is when I have the most time to relax and entertain—most of us do. That’s why it’s ironic that no season makes me feel less relaxed or ready to entertain. Long, hot days make me cranky and sticky—I feel dirty before I even start cooking. I’m not very good at doing nothing at all, but even less so when I’m covered in my own sweat! Yuck! That said, I never pass on visits from the friends and family who are more available in the summer. And by the time the food and drink hit the table, I’m over my issues and I roll sweaty and deep into the “summer fun” of it all. This August, I turn 50, and to celebrate, I’m writing a book that’s a wild and fun…

cool pools

COOL FINDS, HOT TRENDS & GOTTA-KNOW NEWSFrom rainbow unicorns to bright ice pops, pool floats were pure Instagram bait in 2017. This summer, it’s all about the Minnidip ($70, minnidip.com). Branded as “the first designer inflatable pool,” the sleek watering hole is the brainchild of designer Emily Vaca, who figured, Why can’t wading pools be cute? The prints—banana leaf, watermelon, and doughnut—cater to your inner child, but the dimensions (5½ feet wide by 1½ feet tall) and durability (it’s made of heavy-weight PVC) are adult-friendly. Take a dip for a quick cooldown, or better yet, fill ’em with ice and bottles of your favorite rosé for your next backyard bash.PHOTO: GREEN EYE’S IMAGING/COURTESY OF LAUR LORE. ’cue kids   on the block

Moo’s Craft Barbecue in L.A.Smoque BBQ in ChicagoNEW YORK CITYYankee ’cue is a little fancy (think microgreens sprinkled on wings) and influenced by what Billy Durney, owner of Hometown Bar-B-Que (hometownbarbque.com), calls “the most multicultural culinary scene in the world.” BBQ fans can find global grub (Jamaican jerk ribs, Oaxacan chicken) at Hometown and haute riffs on Southern standards at Mighty Quinn’s (mightyquinnsbbq.com).LOS ANGELESTo do Cali barbecue like a local, you have to go underground. We’re talking brisket and ribs doled out in nondescript backyards at spots like Moo’s Craft Barbecue (mooscraftbarbecue.com) and Ragtop Fern’s BBQ. “I didn’t realize how big of a scene we have until I got into it myself,” says Burt Bakman of Trudy’s Underground Barbecue (trudysundergroundbarbecue.com).CHICAGOIn the Windy City, it’s a tale of (at least) two ’cues. On one hand,…
