a huge well done

To all the talented ladies who exhibited at the National Quilt Festival in Port Elizabeth and well done to those who won awards. We, of course, were very chuffed to hear that Claire Wallace had won 1st Place in the Masters category: Large Geometric Quilt and the award for Best Machine Workmanship for her quilt Titanic at the National Quilt Festival. I managed to get hold of Claire before going to print to tell us about her quilt. "I've wanted to make a Storm at Sea quilt and a Mariners Compass quilt for a while now but wanted something a little different. The diamond setting of the blocks was inspired by Linda Franz's book Quilted Diamonds. I drafted my own blocks and compass and pieced them using foundation paper piecing. It…

Requirements MATERIALS: • 5 balls African Expressions CURIOSITY 50g in colour 9057 • 5.5 mm knitting needles • 2 stitch markers TENSION: Not required ABBREVIATIONS : k – knit p – purl (s) – stitch(es) rem – remaining wsf – wrong side facing rsf – right side facing cont – continue STOCKING STITCH: Row 1: Knit all sts Row 2: Purl all sts Pattern Using 5.5 mm knitting needles, cast on 133sts. Cont in stocking stitch until work measures 50 cm. With RSF, knit 67sts as normal, cast off loosely 43sts, knit rem 23sts as normal. With WSF, purl 23sts sts, cast on 43sts, purl rem 67sts to end. This wall hanging is made from an assortment of different types of woolen fabrics, wool felt and some embroidery. Heat n Bond fuses best with a lower heat setting than would normally be used.
