2018 brings change

... Into all our lives and as I write this (today is 14 Feb), hopefully better leadership in this country! Although change is scary, change is also good because it sometimes sets us on a path to a new challenge, a new way of looking at things or even a new career. So with that in mind we have had to look at some changes in the Tucats office. Our children have grown up and after helping grow the family business for many years as photographers and graphic designers and also running the advertising and subscription departments, they have decided that it's time they also follow their own dreams. Owen (Jnr) and Lauren (his long time partner) have decided that they want to start permaculture farming on a farm in…

the not so humble thimble

Thinking he was returning the kiss, Peter dropped an acorn into her hand, and Wendy promised to wear the ‘kiss’ on a chain around her neck. Wendy had just used a needle and thread, and her thimble, to sew on Peter Pan’s shadow which had fallen off after becoming caught in the window. A little girl of the time, wishing to become a lady, would have at hand a ‘housewife’ or sewing bag containing all she would need to do a little darning or sew on a button. Re-attaching a shadow, an unusual task, was easily accomplished by a competent little seamstress who went on to ‘mother’ Peter and the Lost Boys in this classic tale. My first thimble was given to me by my English Grandma. I had, in my…

extra stretchy cast on

This is an easy cast on for extra stretchy rib which is useful for mittens and gloves and top down socks. It can be worked on single, double or triple rib and bounces back beautifully. My mom was knitting mittens at the market and a lady from Zimbabwe stopped to chat (wish we got her name) and told my mom that for an extra stretchy rib, she should add half the amount of stitches and then purl 2 together on the first row. This works perfectly for single rib on an even number of stitches but other than that there are a couple of things you need to remember, and the most important is - you must have your original number of sts at the end of row 1. Abbreviations C/on C/off K P2tog Sts cast on cast…
