single-car freight: a lost cause?

jwrinn@kalmbach.com @TrainsMagazine @trains_magazine As a group of us were waiting on Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 at Clyman Junction, Wis., in July, we watched in amazement as a local from Milwaukee arrived and changed ends before ducking into a siding for the steam train. It was a surprising bit of hustle on the part of the train crew and the dispatcher who put the local in a position to get back to work immediately after the passage of the special. As Bill Stephens explains on page 20, single-car railroading, especially in the truck-competitive east, has taken significant hits over the last two decades. But it is by no means a lost cause. Short-line railroaders will tell you this, because for most of them, carload freight is their livelihood. The eager railroaders on the…

Letter ALCO MEMORIES I enjoyed reading Brian Solomon’s article, “Alco: 50 Years Gone” [“Commentary,” pages 14-15, September]. Growing up in Keokuk, Iowa, I remember hearing the Alcos on the Toledo, Peoria & Western Railway. While in Boone, Iowa, in early August to see Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014, I visited the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad to catch Alco RS1 No. 244. Built in November 1951 as Lake Superior & Ishpeming No. 1002, and painted for the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway in 2008, No. 244 works for the heritage railroad. This was a great road trip, hearing the beautiful sound of the Alco engine laboring away, plus seeing the Big Boy too! last run for the ‘finest railroad’

AMERICA’S FINEST RAILROAD has turned its last wheel. The Black Mesa & Lake Powell, the 78-mile electrified, coal-hauling railroad in Northern Arizona, ran its final train in the early morning hours of Aug. 26, 2019, victim of the pending closure of the coalfired power plant it feeds. The final trip from Peabody Energy’s Kayenta Mine to the Salt River Project Navajo Generating Station power plant near Page, Ariz., left the mine before dawn and arrived at Page shortly after 7 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time. (While Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings Time, the Navajo Nation does.) Photographer Zachary Larsen says a ceremony for the final arrival was held at the plant but was limited to employees. The railroad began operation in October 1973. In an October 1974 article featuring photos by Richard Steinheimer,…

cn buys route from csx; roads to partner on intermodal service

CANADIAN NATIONAL WILL PURCHASE CSX Transportation’s line linking the Syracuse, N.Y., area with Montreal. The August deal came just three weeks after the railroads said they would begin joint intermodal service in October linking Toronto and Montreal with New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. “CN is excited to be expanding its reach in New York. With this acquisition from CSX, we are opening up new opportunities for our existing customers and local businesses who will be able to access new markets through CN’s unique three-coasts network,” CN CEO JJ Ruest says. The 40-mph CSX St. Lawrence and Montreal subdivisions total more than 220 miles of track. The line purchase includes trackage from Valleyfield, Quebec, to Woodard, N.Y., which is just north of Syracuse and a connection with the former New York Central…

fra, csx probe collision on line with ptc

INVESTIGATORS ARE TRYING to determine why two CSX Transportation trains collided in August on an Ohio line protected by positive train control, the multibillion-dollar safety system designed to prevent collisions. The probe by the Federal Railroad Administration and CSX includes an examination of the proper activation, operation, and functioning of PTC on the territory as well as any human factors that may have contributed to the Aug. 12 wreck. PTC was active at the time of the predawn collision near Carey, Ohio, on CSX’s former Chesapeake & Ohio route between Columbus and Toledo, according to people familiar with the matter. But the safety system had been disengaged on the northbound train, Columbus-Willard local H702, that slammed into the side of southbound unit frac sand train W314 at the end of a passing siding,…
