ed’s letter

The current season of Survivor South Africa has had viewers on tenter hooks waiting for the next knife to be plunged into a castaway alliance. How Mike & Co allowed the Amigos – Rob, Steffi and Nicole – to lead them around like a prize bull at an auction is a mystery. They never saw it coming until host Nico snuffed their torches one after another at tribal council. If you want a reminder of the best – and worst – betrayals from Island Of Secrets, turn to p28. And on p29 you’ll find out who’s competing in the 33rd season of Survivor US. If you’re not a reality fan (there are three more focus pages featuring Braxton Family Values, Top Gear and Keeping Up With The Kardashians), there is…

the final whistle

Dwayne Johnson has put his heart, mind, body, soul and bank account into his sports dramedy Ballers (2015-current, stream all five seasons exclusive to Showmax). And for good reason. It’s basically his own story. Those in-game montages of a young guy who looks like Dwayne playing football really is the former WWE wrestler – he played defensive tackle at the University Of Miami, Florida on full scholarship and would’ve gone on to be a pro NFL footballer if he hadn’t been hit with career-ending injuries. THE MAIN MAN Dwayne’s character Spencer Strasmore has gone through business heavenly highs and lows that make the bottom of the ocean look like the shallow end of the pool. And that too mirrors Dwayne’s personal life. “I know what it’s like to owe a lot of…

Imbewu’s Rampersad family have been truly unlucky in love lately (see more on p25). After Rampersad matriarch Nirupa (Jailoshini Naidoo) learnt her lesson in an affair with the psychotically manipulative Sanil Maharaj (Jack Devnarain) earlier this year, she has seen her one daughter Mira (Mishka Gounden) make the same mistake. Now her eldest daughter Shria (Kajal Maharaj) could be walking into the same trap with an obsessive man. But the good news is that the family’s struggles have helped to heal Nirupa’s marriage with her husband Pranav (Koobeshen Naidoo). Every cloud has a silver lining. In real life, that silver glow might come to actress, radio host, comedy queen and presenter Jailoshini via her TV screen… What was the first TV show you acted out with friends? Comedy series Friends (1994-2004)…

burning question!

Why are local shows so much more to make than international content? I don’t understand – PETER, VIA EMAIL The main reason is that local content still needs to go through the full production model, while international content is already cast, written, filmed, produced, edited and packaged for distribution, explains DStv’s channel publicity and marketing team. “It’s not just a matter of ‘let us make a new show’ and you do it. Firstly, the show needs to be pitched by the production company and approved, if there is budget from the broadcaster. From there, they need to build the script, write the screenplay, cast the actors (who aren’t always available), find locations, build sets, hire camera and production crew and get the filmed content into production.” All of that adds up…
