ed’s letter

When someone asks me what type of work I do, my standard reply is that I work for a magazine. I’ve tried saying that I’m a journalist (which I will always be), but then they immediately picture an online newspaper and talk about crime, so now I hide behind a magazine. The follow-up question of course is which magazine, and I reply, “tvplus. Yes I watch TV for a living.” And doesn’t that sound like a dream job? I’m not complaining, but there is a tad more that goes into tvplus other than hours and hours of channel hopping and binging. We negotiate with PRs and channel heads to bring you the best stories we possibly can. If there is something you would like to see more of or don’t…

burning question!

We’ve noticed a growing trend over the last six months, where the number of shows moving and being dropped from line-ups has increased significantly. It happened while we were putting this magazine together too – three shows fell away. So what is the reason? There are a few, as we found out. SABC3 pulled Billions (2016-now) in December 2019 because the physical tapes didn’t arrive on time. “We get digital copies of episodes that we use for broadcast,” explains publicist Doulha Domingo, “but we get physical tapes as back-up should something go wrong with the digital. If those don’t arrive, we won’t air the show as a precaution.” M-Net City on the other hand has moved fantasy series Legacies (2018-now) twice since November as they simply had no space. “We…

veep’s very very best

Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is a woman on a mission in Veep (2012-2019, stream all 7 seasons on Showmax). She’s a career politician with her eyes on the biggest prize: the White House. Does everything go according to plan? Not a chance! Does Selina come back time and time again, conveniently forgetting past mistakes and making brand-new ones? You better believe it! “The point is to pull back the curtains and show what they really are like behind closed doors,” says Julia. “The language [swearing] helps illustrate the difference perfectly between behind the scenes and in the public eye, behind and in front of the camera.” There are only 65 episodes. They’re short, sweet, outrageous and totally unPC. So if you’re looking for a charming romance drama, you’re in the…

nkanyiso mchunu

Nkanyiso Mchunu is revealing a romantic and poetic side to Imbewu’s (2018-now, see more on p15) stoic mercenaryturned-Maluju Oil general manager Nkululeko Sibiya this year. Nkanyiso may be playing a newcomer who’s still finding his feet in the Bhengus’ dangerous and deceptive world, but TV is an old stomping ground for the 30-year-old actor. Muvhango (1997-now) fans might remember him as Sizwe, the guy obsessed with Nonny (Phindile Gwala) in 2013. And he played Justice in the “don’t drink and drive” drama Ingozi (2017-2018). But of course his history with TV goes way, way back… What was the first TV show you acted out with friends? There was a show in the ’90s about children in Jozi who solved mystery cases called Dynamites Diepkloof Dudes. I would act as Muzi the…
