the shotgunner's nemesis

IT’S CALLED THE SHOT Show lean-in. At the crowded annual shooting trade show in Vegas, anyone you speak to who has a weathered face is likely to cup their hand behind their ear, lean in closer and say, “what was that again?” All shooters suffer some hearing loss, and places that have a lot of background noise, like SHOT, make it really tough to follow conversations. Sitting here, writing this, my ears are ringing, and they shouldn’t be. Yours probably are, too. Getting “rung” is the worst part of waterfowling. Layouts and pits create perfect opportunities to have a shotgun muzzle blast go off way too close to your head. Swinging on birds lends itself to unleashing a thunderclap next to your buddy’s ear, however unintentionally. You tend to remember the bad…

The Golden Eye I AM A long-time waterfowler and Lab owner, trainer, fan, father, and lover of dogs. Brandon Fien’s image (right) on the cover of the April/May 2018 issue of WILDFOWL was stunningly simple in that it captured the essence of the black Lab—that golden eye! I applaud Brandon, his subject, the cropping of the photo, and your decision to use it. I lost two black Labs last year before Christmas. They were littermates who passed on at 14 years of age. For the first time in 35 years, I do not have a black Lab by my side. We have had numerous Labs and trained them ourselves to voice, hand, and whistle commands. We train them to be obedient, calm, polite, steady, friendly, happy, good citizens that can go anywhere and…

no refuge is safe

SECRETARY OF THE Interior Ryan Zinke announced in May new or expanded hunting opportunities on 30 national wildlife refuges. The proposal will add an additional 248,000 acres to the refuge system’s hunting and fishing programs and will expand existing migratory bird hunting on 19 refuges. That's the good news. The announcement was part of a broader push by the Trump administration to increase hunter access and partici pation. The new opportunities are expected to pass the approval process and will be in place for the 2018 19 season. All told, 377 of the country’s 566 refuges will be open to at least one type of hunting. In most cases, hunting is allowed when it does not interfere with the mission or purpose of the individual refuge. “We have an unrivaled asset in…

MANITOBA IS PRO DUCKS Manitoba’s legislature handed ducks a win after it passed the Sustainable Watershed Act. The new law prevents landowners from draining wetlands and requires new wetlands to be created when others are legally drained. Landowners can be subject to heavy fines if they violate the act. Ducks Unlimited Canada played a major role in crafting and passing the legislation. DUCK STAMP GOES HUNTING The USFWS modified federal duck stamp art rules. Artists are now required to include “a hunting-related accessory and/or portray the theme celebrating our waterfowl hunting heritage.” The move has resulted in a running debate in the conservation community. Some have suggested the addition may alienate non-hunters who buy a federal duck stamp to enter NWRs or to support wetlands conservation. A handful of past stamps have been…

DUCK HUNTING MURDER MYSTERY The widow of a man who allegedly disappeared on a 2000 solo duck hunt to a lake in Florida has been indicted on murder charges in a report published by the Arizona Republic. Denise Williams (the suspect) married her husband’s best friend five years after his death. That man, Brian Winchester, sold her first husband, Mike Williams, a $1 million insurance policy six months before he went missing. Winchester is currently serving 20 years in prison for kidnapping Denise Williams at gunpoint. He was recently sentenced, and Mike Williams’ body was found the next day. MICHIGAN BIRD BRAIN In May, a video of a Canada goose landing on the field at Comerica Park in Detroit during a Tigers-Angels game (and subsequently flying into a scoreboard in the upper deck)…

WHEN WE’RE A couple of months out from the season, most of us start focusing pretty heavily on dog training. We get our retrievers outside to brush up on commands and basic obedience and start to toss the dummy around. This is all good, but it’s not enough to get a dog into hunting shape, which should also be a major concern, because overall performance is directly tied to physical fitness. This all starts at the scale. Your dog’s weight in the summer will dictate the level of intensity you should be working him. Most of the time, retrievers won’t suffer from being too skinny during the off- ea on It happen and is easily identifiable by the visible slatted ribs and the showing of the backbone. This is rare, and…
