glorious summer

Isn’t this time of year just the best? As well as holidays on the horizon for many of us, there’s also the promise of long days in the garden and the general feeling of wellbeing that warm sunny weather brings. For me there is a little anxiety attached to the rise in temperature, though, and that’s bare legs. My friend Charlotte is in sandals and flippy skirts the minute a patch of blue sky appears, but I take a bit more time to acclimatise. The brilliant fashion journalist Anna Murphy relates to my summer dressing dilemma and gives excellent warm weather wardrobe advice on page 94. I hope you find it useful and feel as compelled as me to buy more belted midi dresses. Women’s magazines have long featured advice on beach…

DAVID VENNI has been photographing celebrities for over 20 years. His diverse work has taken him all over the world, shooting everyone from Lady Gaga to Terence Stamp. He lives in North London with his wife and two children. He photographs Jo Whiley on p56. Tell us about a wonderful time you’ve had in the summer. It was last summer – from bombing down to the South Coast to catch some last-minute sea breezes, cool water and sunsets, to an impromptu glamping trip with friends in Oxford, where we swam in the river. ‘women need to on themselves, we do so much for everybody else!’

With her sunny smile and boundless energy, Anita Rani epitomises summer magic during our photo shoot. The 41-year-old presenter’s zest for life is infectious and she has the whole w&h team swooning over her while she twirls and jumps for the camera (which also loves her) in a floaty dress. She is clearly a confident and natural performer, so it comes as no surprise when we sit down to chat with Anita that she reveals her life is all about dreams. “I want to be Beyoncé! I don’t think I’ve lost that nine-year-old in me who just wants to be on that stage. It’s really important to have dreams, it doesn’t matter how silly they are, they’re yours.” This year, Anita has already achieved one big dream of hers – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in…

As I was born in July I love summer. Actually, I was three weeks premature and jaundiced, so I spent my first days on Earth in an incubator under a heat-lamp. It must have set my internal thermometer for life, not to mention giving me a deeply misleading picture of the climate of my native South Wales. Basking in the rays of that lamp, baby Allison must have thought that she’d been delivered to a tropical paradise. Little did the innocent baby know that beyond the walls of the maternity hospital lay the world capital of rain. I don’t think I felt truly warm again until I went to the Greek islands 20 years later. “We all need summer’s healing magic” Who knows, maybe I’ve been trying to recapture that early heat…
