WHEN President Cyril Ramaphosa announced we’re moving to level 2 restrictions I thought of my mother. It’s her birthday in a few weeks and we weren’t sure if, like my father’s, it would be another video party to celebrate another year of her life. But now I can make a delicious meal and an over-the-top dessert (or three, as is our wont), and I’ve realised again just how precious time and what we do with it is. I hope by now you’ve been able to see your nearest and dearest in the flesh and tell them “I love you” without a screen between you. That you’ve been able to take tentative steps into a still-scary world in a way that’s safe. And that you’re looking forward to the coming season, where you can feel…

my spell in a covid field hospital

I WAS admitted to the temporary Covid-19 hospital at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 6 July and was discharged on the 15th. I was so impressed with the treatment I received. I think everything was so well organised and the staff were so dedicated. The management went out of their way to make the wards homely. We’d get a clean towel and pyjamas every morning while our bedding was changed. Later the staff came round with tea and coffee and a plate with a spoon, knife and fork on it wrapped in a serviette, two rolls separately plastic-wrapped and HE’S A ROGUE So King Juan Carlos of Spain has done a midnight flit (YOU, 20 August). This supposed paragon of virtue, former leader of the Spanish monarchy and adored by millions of…

we’re in puzzle paradise

When it’s cold and I’ve had a hard day’s slog I relax in bed and do YOU’s codebreakers to my heart’s content. My brain, which doesn’t tire as quickly as my body, is still kept active because the puzzles are so absorbing. Another huge plus for me is that my son, who’s schizophrenic, has been drawn into trying to complete a puzzle when we sit together after supper. You can’t believe what a breakthrough this is. He’s finding that he’s much cleverer than he knew! Thank you so much for this hidden bonus. EMILE SHREVE, BARRYDALE I want to thank YOU magazine for the wonderful new Codebreakers magazine, which is packed with fun and enjoyment. JEAN WARD, EMAIL Wow! What an amazing codebreakers magazine. Thank you so much. I’m thoroughly enjoying what I’ve done so…

in brief

I’m surprised the author of the article on incontinence (YOU, 6 August) didn’t mention the TVT (tension-free vaginal tape) operation. It lifts a woman’s sagging bladder or urethra into a normal position. I had it done in my sixties and now 10 years later I’ve never had a “wee problem”. It fixed the matter immediately. I used to leak whenever I sneezed or coughed. JO, EMAIL My mom, Vena Criswell, celebrated her 75th birthday recently. She’s always done so much for her family that I’d love her to see herself in her favourite mag, which she buys every week without fail. It would be the best birthday present my sister, brother and I could give her. She has eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. KAREN SCHRONEN, EMAIL Princess Beatrice and Edo Mapelli Mozzi and their…

a home of our own

THEY’VE lived in a cosy cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace, a controversially refurbished pad in the English countryside, a mansion in Canada and an ostentatious sweep of magnificence in the heart of Hollywood. But they’ve never really had a place that was all theirs. Either the roof over their heads was a gift from the queen or on loan from a fabulously rich friend. Until now, that is. Harry and Meghan, are finally king and queen of their own castle after dropping an eye-watering $14,65 million (about R256m) on a sprawling suburban estate in Montecito in the Californian city of Santa Barbara. The French Provencal-style home – or the Chateau of Riven Rock as it’s rather grandly called – could accommodate several members of the royal family, should they decide…
