WHEN I was a student I read The Powers That Be by David Halberstam. The book looks at the rise of media giants such as Time magazine, The Washington Post, CBS News and the Los Angeles Times and I was envious, wanting to be a part of such a pivotal moment in media history. Would there ever again be such exciting shifts, I thought then. And would I be fortunate to be part of it? Now, a few weeks into the launch of the subscription service we’re part of, I’m delighted to say I am. It’s been great to see the interest in a digital version of YOU, especially for people who prefer the convenience of having it on their phones. And being able to have our articles read by people who might never…

TODAY’S YOUR CHANCE TO BE KIND WE ALL want to impact the world. Yet we don’t often realise how much we influence those around us. Our moods and emotions ripple out to others. Even a seemingly small gesture can go far. A kind word or gesture could be the very thing a depressed or suicidal acquaintance needs. We all know how powerful words can be. According to the kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), every time we do a kind act, an extremely beautiful angel is created. If we could see it in this life, we’d want to do good things all the time. We could also learn from the African tradition of ubuntu, where treating others well is part of the culture. This means that we’re worthwhile because of others. Greeting strangers on the street is…

a time to remember

We recently planted some trees in our front garden in remembrance of those who passed and the heroes who saved so many lives during this pandemic. NEVER FORGET, EMAIL The days were dark and scary as each patient wondered how close death was. You weren’t sure you’d wake up the next day, especially whenever a new patient was rushed in on drips, oxygen, gasping for breath, fighting for life. An additional diagnosis of bipolar disorder turned my world into the most confusing place ever. But the nurses were energetic, friendly and warm, and gave me hope. This was in a female Covid-19-positive ward at Charlotte Maxeke academic hospital in Johannesburg. The misery ended the day my partner brought me a friend to serve my Covid-19 sentence with: YOU magazine (13 August issue). Unbelievably it…

in brief

In response to Jo (YOU Say, 27 August) I had the TVT (tension-free vaginal tape) procedure done and it backfired. My urologist said it happens occasionally and he’d redo it for nothing. My reply: no way! Once bitten, twice a failure. SINDY, DURBAN Chad Esau is gorgeous (YOU, 6 August)! His vitiligo makes him even better looking. Love you, Chad! EUGENIE, SMS I’ve finished my new 2020 YOU Code-breakers and my spring Blockbusters book is just about done. Can’t wait for the next editions. Thanks for saving my sanity during lockdown! LG, CAPE TOWN Why do people park their cars up against walls and not on kerbs? I witness daily how children and people in wheelchairs and on crutches have to step into the road to get past. Where are the traffic police? PB, MUIZENBERG I so enjoy…

loved up in france

‘They were kissing and he was being super-attentive to her’ There’s a certain irony that Brad and Nicole chose France to go on what is, as far we know, their first romantic break together. Because it was when Angie and Brad were en route to LA from France that they had their bust-up and – well, that’s all ancient history now. Onwards and upwards for Brad, who by all accounts is smitten with his young girlfriend. According to an eyewitness, the pair acted “like loved-up teenagers”. “They were kissing and Brad was being super-attentive to her. He was in a semi-public place but didn’t seem to mind people seeing him. She’s a real beauty.” According to an insider, she’s a good match for Brad. “She has spunk, she’s smart. If she’s dating Brad, good…
