MY NEPHEW just celebrated his first birthday. And although it’s the only normal he’s known, it’s so strange for me when I think of his short time on Earth. Half of it has been spent in lock-down. He knows the camera of a cellphone quite well but not the loud and raucous family lunches we’re all accustomed to and who knows how he’ll react when he’s around huge groups of kids. Last year this time we were awaiting his arrival. How unrecognisable the world is compared to then. Yet look at us. We’re still here, making it (even though some days are really, really hard). Like my nephew, we’re living our new normal as if there’s no other, and making the most of what we have. Every time we put together this magazine, I…

WHAT LOCKDOWN HAS TAUGHT ME The support from the community was overwhelming. In three months I’ve sold more than 140 batches of rusks! I’m so proud of myself for keeping busy and making an income in these dark times. Lockdown has also taught me a valuable lesson about money. I don’t have to go for a facial or haircut every month. I don’t have to buy the most expensive products. I don’t need new clothes every season. I choose to support local and independent business before I buy from the big corporate companies. There are so many hidden gems out there. It’s been an interesting year that taught me more about my resilience, confidence and strength, than my whole life combined. BAKER, BALLITO I’M BY by no means rich, nor do I come from a…

TIME FOR A TRIM Just like the 21st Century Rapunzel (YOU, 13 August), I too had hair of an exceptional length. As a teenager my hair grew down to below the back of my knees and was my mother’s pride and joy. My best friend also had long hair but, whereas my mother trimmed at least 4mm off mine every month, my friend never allowed a pair of scissors near her locks. The result was that her hair was always shorter than mine, and ended in the same scraggly fly-away ends that Malgorzata sports. Nothing encourages your tresses to grow faster than a regular monthly trim. Malgorzata’s hair is absolutely beautiful but would look so much better without the scraggly lifeless ends. A much-needed trim would enhance the visual appeal of her crowning…

meghan and harry’s new mansion

Thanks YOU for this article on Harry and Meghan (YOU, 13 August). Well, she certainly got what she was aiming for all along: mixing with and living like her star friends while all Harry’s friends got left behind. But I think they’ve bitten off more than they can chew with this house. Until she married him Meghan was relatively unheard of, even in her own country. And we all know the people of Hollywood seldom see 50-year marriages or even 10-year ones, if it comes to that and with the high cost of wanting to live as her friends do, I think they’ve made a huge mistake. Time will tell. I don’t feel sorry for Harry but I wish him well for the future and hope he has time to spend with his…

in brief

My husband and I are pensioners. On Monday 31 August we had breakfast at our favourite restaurant in Randridge Mall. When we asked for the bill the waitress told us it had been paid for, but wouldn’t say who’d done it. To the person who did this for us, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much. SHEILA AND BARRY, EMAIL Vernon Daniels, I fully agree with you and join you in congratulating the Covid-19 field hospital (YOU Say, 27 August). I greatly admire and care about all the long-suffering carers and staff. You will be remembered fondly and blessed. SINDY, DURBAN. Am I the only one who finds it extremely irritating to have adverts around the screen in the middle of 7de Laan? It’s bad enough that we only get about…
