THE science of how memory works is fascinating. I haven’t even started to scratch the surface of the research but I marvel at what the human brain can do. Some memories are embedded so deep that when they rise to the surface they can take your breath away. I was reminded of this when I recently reconnected with an old friend and her family who once welcomed me into their home as if I was part of the family. In the space of a few moments it felt like the intervening years melted away and the bonds that once bound us were as strong as ever. I saw my friend’s sister and found a face as familiar as if I’d seen it just last week. A mom who hadn’t aged a day and…

SAY WHAT? DURING a recent conversation involving several people, one person repeatedly pronounced “vice versa” as “visa versa” and, in an effort to be polite, no one attempted to correct her. One finds too that people constantly confuse “you’re” with “your”, “stationery” with “stationary”, “resume” and “résumé”, say “renumeration” instead of “remuneration”, and so forth. The most hilarious for me occurred many years ago when a friend and I were taking a walk and she told me she’d had a halla-kin-nation the previous night. My steps faltered as I tried to absorb this foreign word until it struck me that she actually meant “hallucination”! Words failed me. But the prize goes to a well-known elderly local personality, who’s insistent on keeping her native language 100% pure, without exception. For example, she refers to…

WHAT A TRAGEDY My heart bleeds for Gill Mathewson (YOU, 10 September), who had to witness her husband, West, being mauled to death by his two “friendly lions”. I can’t imagine anything more horrific. Gill had previously stated that the lionesses weren’t aggressive and they honestly didn’t believe they’d attack anyone. How many more lion owners need to die at the hands of their pets before someone realises that these creatures are wild animals at heart, and no amount of taming or rearing them from when they’re young is going to stop them from doing what comes naturally to them? An adult lioness weighs approximately 130kg and can attain a speed of about 80km/h in short bursts. Despite not knowing exactly what caused them to turn on West, he had no chance of…

kudos to cyril

As a healthcare worker I salute our president, Cyril Ramaphosa. He took the initiative at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic by putting people’s health first, which staggered the intake of patients. We should be applauding him for all he’s trying to do. There are two wars. Corona and corruption. We have to restart building our rainbow nation as a united force. President Ramaphosa, I salute and respect you! DOCTOR ON THE FRONTLINE, SMS The people who complain about the draconian measures to combat the virus should bear in mind that many more of us might be in hospital or dead by now because of Covid-19. Cyril Ramaphosa had to do what he did. GLAD TO BE ALIVE, HERMANUS Thank you, Cyril! Finally level one of lockdown. Let’s hope the economy gets back…

in brief

I read recently that the founder of Gift of the Givers, Imtiaz Sooliman, should be awarded the Nobel Prize for humanity. Whenever there’s a major world disaster somehow they’re there, so I heartily agree. Here in SA with the Covid-19 pandemic we have Gift of the Givers knocking on our doors with unrelenting giving, sharing and kindness. Shine on always with the good work. MICHAEL DE BEER, CAPE TOWN Codebreakers are my favourite puzzles of all times. I have four pages left of YOU’s 2020 magazine and can honestly say I haven’t peeked at the solutions. I love the use of South African words and hope another edition is coming soon. NENIA KIRK, EMAIL Thomas and Declan, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves (YOU, 10 September). You’re both demanding and ungrateful brats! Get…
