you say

JUST before Covid-19 became a reality, we planned to host Elizabeth Gilbert at events in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The renowned author would talk about her new book and take questions from YOU readers. Of course, those events couldn’t happen in person once lockdown and travel restrictions kicked in – but that didn’t stop us. She recently joined us at a virtual event and shared a number of wisdoms she’s learnt over the years. There were plenty (to read about it go to you.co.za) but what stuck with me long after I’d closed my laptop was her advice to someone wanting to change their lives but feeling reluctant to let go of safe, familiar ways. Listen to your body as you take your next steps, came Liz’s response. And try to see what…

love being with you, mom!

AS SOON as inter-provincial travel was permitted, my family and I travelled from Pretoria to visit my mother in Polokwane. When we woke up the next morning in her house, my wife and I and our two kids decided that we’d eat all our meals with granny that day. I could see that my mother was trying to fight back her tears when we gathered around the table during lunch. I could tell that she was overwhelmed with happiness. Nothing makes her happier than to see her children and grandchildren eating a delicious meal together. My mother lives with her other three grandchildren but those youngsters don’t understand the significance of having quality time with their granny. It made me realise that after raising their children with love, all mothers remain lonely when their kids…

heritage day fun

I bought the YOU magazine edition of 24 September and was delighted to see a few Heritage Day international recipes. I tried the Greek lamb sausage/boerewors with tzatziki, feta and tomatoes. Heritage Day was a special day this year in spite of the Covid-19 storm. South Africans of all walks of life celebrated by taking part in the Jerusalema dance challenge with lots of rhythm, traditional braais, and unity. It was such a special and unforgettable public holiday of our culture and unique diversity. Thank you, Mr President, Master KG and Nomcebo for lifting our spirits and cheering the entire planet amid the 2020 pandemic. ATHINA, HOUGHTON We wrote to YOU magazine in April to tell you about the York House Lock-down Gardening Committee that we formed. We’re pleased to tell you that…

in brief

This is my husband, Michael Alexander, chilling with his YOU magazine and Moose! MICHELLE, ORANJEMUND Rabbit meat is the best (YOU, 24 September). I’d eat it every day if I could. So what if it’s a furry animal? A cow has beautiful eyes yet it gets slaughtered as well and eaten, so what’s wrong with eating rabbit? BUNNY MUNCHER, SMS Your fiction story A Real Man was a brilliant read (YOU, 24 September)! Harry is set up to be the fall guy. How easily he was duped! It dawned on me how many times in our own lives we’ve been set up by that charming individual, with such a wide smile, only to match the size of the dagger behind their back! Thank you, Team YOU. DIANE TOWERS, GREYTOWN The lockdown these last few months has…

a man of his century

WHEN he wed the princess who’d be queen nearly 70 years ago, he knew his life would forever be overshadowed by a woman who put duty before all else. Yet Prince Philip was never going to be a pushover. A complex man, he tried to assert himself in many ways – and a new book casts fresh insight on the ways the Duke of Edinburgh stamped his will and whims on his wife and family. Prince Philip Revealed: A Man of His Century by acclaimed royal author Ingrid Seward delves into the heart of a man who could be alternately cruel and kind, fun and formidable, louche and loyal. Philip (99) is now living out his twilight years in genteel comfort – yet as this extract shows, there were decades when he did…
