There’s something to be said for the power of nostalgia. I started rewatching Dawson’s Creek, a TV show I loved when I was in high school. And after a few schoolfriends reminded me of some of the music we listened to back then, I’ve been cycling through old albums on Spotify with glee. I’m not the only one. My husband is re-reading a seven-book series he finished a few years ago and playing old games he once loved. My best friend has been tagging me on social media, pointing out various old films we must watch when we can finally have a catch-up day (Notting Hill? Yes please!), and countless people around the globe are rediscovering old classics now that new movies aren’t hitting the cinema at the pace they did before. There’s something…

SO MANY HEROES TO THANK THERE’S so muchnegativity and unpleasantness at the moment that I want to share the story of what happened to me recently. My day began with the phone call every parent dreads – a man called Chris telling me my daughter had been in an accident on the R21 heading towards Pretoria. He was behind her when it happened. My nightmare began as I tried frantically to get to the accident scene. With early-morning traffic and now accident traffic, I put my hazards on and drove in the emergency lane. The number of people who moved out of my way or let me in was absolutely amazing. Thank you to each and every one of you. Finally, I got to the accident scene and jumped from my car to…

about katlego

Katlego Maboe would like us to believe he’s never abused his partner (YOU, 5 November). Dear Katlego, I fail to believe that you think that cheating on your wife is not a form of abuse! In case you’re confused, please educate yourself. Gender-based violence encompasses mental and emotional abuse as well as physical. Z WARRIN, SMS Monique, they say every man deserves a 10th chance. But once a cheat, always a cheat. Katlego has been disrespectful to you and isn’t setting a good example to his son. Dump him and move on. DAVID, EMAIL Monique is angry and hurt and is lashing out. This can be hurtful to a person’s reputation and career. In better times, she was happy to shine in his glory and limelight. A person can make a mistake. It can be…

in brief

Thanks, YOU, for keeping us informed and entertained and for bringing us news and views – both local and from abroad – through the many weeks of Covid-19. YOU is so readable it makes life more liveable. FERN, SMS. We moved to Empangeni recently and while packing I found a letter announcing I’d won a watch for the YOU Blockbuster in 2001. I’ve been doing the crossword weekly for many years – I think since you first published it. I buy YOU mainly for the puzzles but I’ve always loved the interesting articles. I never miss a copy. MARIE PAULINE SAUZIER, EMPANGENI Recently when I visited an ill friend I showed him your article on sensational pics taken from drones (YOU, 15 October). His eyes lit up with interest and for a short while…

let the healing begin

THEIR opponents have a lot to say about them but the one thing nobody can accuse them of is a lack of political experience. Between them President-elect Joe Biden and his deputy, Kamala Harris, have more than 60 years at the very top of US government – and they’re going to need to draw on every bit of it, haul in every favour, play every diplomatic card and generally knuckle down because the US they’ve inherited is as fractured as it’s ever been. They’ll be leading a country in the throes of a raging pandemic, riven with division and racial tensions and on the brink of recession. “We’re fortunate that Joe’s got what it takes to be president and already carries himself that way,” former US president Barack Obama wrote in a statement…
