OUT OF THIS WORLD: JULY 1985 “One of the forerunners in the photography effort to make Arabian horse photos live up to their gorgeous live counterparts was a young man named Johnny Johnston, who really just wanted to get a good picture of his own horse. “‘Johnny Johnston’ has now become a household word in the Arabian world, and we are proud to present this longtime devoted friend of the Arabian horse, and of the Arabian industry in America — along with some of our favorite photos that have shown the world just how beautiful the Arabian horse truly is.” — Lucille Shuler, 1985 Enjoy a few throwback articles, from…

what in the world

In April 2019, we lost one of the greatest photographers of our breed, and the forerunner of Arabian horse photography as we know it today. Everyone who ever met him has a favorite Johnny Johnston story. In this 1985 interview by Lucille Shuler, Johnny tells some of his favorite stories. Here’s a sample. They sure don’t make ‘em like Johnny anymore. - Denise Hearst It was Frank McCoy who really got me my start. He took me down to the Southern California Arabian Association and introduced me to an awful lot of people. I really was trying to “set the standard,” and owe an awful lot to Frank — and to John Rogers. Ol’ Murrel Lacey told him, “Y’know, Mr. Rogers, I think we ought to get this fellow down to the…

who holds the winning hand?

April 11-14, 2019 South Point Equestrian Complex Las Vegas, Nevada Las Vegas is a town where you put your cards on the table and you take your chance. It is about risk, fame, glory, a bit of glitter — and loss. Some win big and some lose big, but that is what Las Vegas is all about. This year at the Arabian Breeders World Cup show, there was certainly no sure thing, and it wasn’t over till it was over! Usually this show is a validation of horses that did well in Scottsdale and want to continue to pick up momentum before U.S. Nationals. Or, there are some horses that did not show at Scottsdale who win big here, and use that boost to go on to Europe, perhaps, or to U.S. Nationals. This…

janina merz on om el sinon, supreme champion senior stallion

“I was taking a big risk having Om El Sinon shown at Vegas,” said owner and breeder Janina Merz. “He was a six-year-old unshown stallion. He has always had a quiet following of people who really like him and have bred to him, but this was a chance to show him to a much larger audience. “I have always believed in Sinon, not only because he is a beautiful and correct stallion, but because he is such a good sire. He consistently sires foals that are typey, short backed, and can trot! They are all little ‘complete-package’ foals. So my next goal is to get a number of his offspring into the ring so that more people can see what a great sire he is. “Om El Sinon is also a great-minded…

a short interview with judge claudia darius

What was your impression of the show overall, and what did you think of the quality of the horses? I was very impressed with the setup and the professional organization of the Arabian Breeders World Cup. It was my first time in Las Vegas, and I truly enjoyed it. The whole team did a fantastic job to make our stay memorable. It was a totally different experience and very different from the shows in Europe and the Middle East in particular. The quality of the horses showed a wide variety of different types as well as functionality and movements, which I tried to capture with my scores. Did any horses in particular impress you? My heart always belongs to the females … I truly enjoyed several fillies who were of excellent quality and could compete successfully…
