Kenny Whittle, Photographer I can’t live without my Nike Air Vortex trainers. Someone told me recently that as you reach your thirties and find a style of trainer that you love, just stick with them. That’s what I’ve done. I don’t own more than one pair but as soon as they’re worn out, I buy the same style and just change the colour Joseph Kocharian, Fashion director I can’t live without my “RF” Roger Federer cap. I’m obsessed with tennis and he’s the love of my life. I have it in lots of different colours but I don’t wear it when I go to see him play because I don’t want to jinx him. I once randomly bumped into Rafael Nadal while wearing it, which was a bit awkward Sven Bayerbach, Groomer I love statement…

editor in chief’s letter

Welcome to LGBT History Month. Let’s talk about rainbow flags. In 1978, Gilbert Baker was encouraged by filmmaker Artie Bressan Jr to create a flag that would become the symbol for “the dawn of a new gay consciousness and freedom.” In his research, Gilbert looked at how the flags of countries such as the USA and France owed their beginnings to rebellion or revolution. “As a community, both local and international, gay people were in the midst of an upheaval, a battle for equal rights, a shift in status where we were demanding power, taking it,” he says in his memoir. “This was our new revolution: a tribal, individualistic and collective vision.” Gilbert’s first rainbow flag was composed of eight stripes, symbolising sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic, serenity and spirit, and…

always and for ever

One of the largest destructions of queer culture was under the Nazis. The Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin was emptied and all its books burned in 1933. Before that, it was run by Magnus Hirschfeld, who campaigned for gay rights as early as the 1920s, and not only collected stories of queer people, but shared them with other LGBT+ people, so they knew they weren’t ever alone. But we don’t talk about it. In 1951, The Homosexual in America: A Subjective Approach was published under the pen name Donald Webster Cory. In it, the author details his double-life as a queer man (married to a woman) in the Twenties, Thirties, Forties and Fifties. It called for equal rights for LGBT+ people and was considered one of the first major works of the gay…

How did you settle on the stage name Saint Daniel? My actual name, Danila, confuses people here [in the UK]. I’ve been asked countless times why I have a female name, but back in Russia it is considered very masculine. As a child [though] I seemed very non-binary – people called me “kid” because it was hard to determine whether I was a boy or a girl. How would you describe your music? Massive Attack meets Depeche Mode. My music is heavily inspired by late-Nineties “trip-hop” and I’d say my voice is reminiscent of Depeche’s Dave Gahan. Complex lyric content with a strong instrumental is a winning formula. When did you decide to pursue a singing career? Initially, I moved to London to study fashion. I would have [pursued singing] a long time ago if it…
