should vanners have a licence?

There has recently been a suggestion that people who tow a caravan should have a special licence to do so. That would mean going for a test to receive the licence, and then having to pay for a renewal every year. This could become quite expensive. Licenses don’t mean that the person holding them are expert drivers, it just means they have proven knowledge of the basics and can operate the vehicle in a test situation. Touring with a caravan on open country roads is the beginning of a lifetime learning process, which you can only get from experience. Licencing won’t fix the problem involving accidents on and off-road. Heavy vehicle drivers require a special licence and we don’t assume that they will never have an accident just because they…

cotton on

Goondiwindi, or ‘Gundy’ as the locals affectionately call it, really surprised us. Many might know this region of Queensland as the home of Gunsynd, the ‘Goondiwindi Grey’, even though he only ever came here twice. There is no denying this thoroughbred racehorse of his racing record that has never been beaten. He was the crowds’ favourite and he knew it right up until his final race. However, it’s the cutting-edge technology that will leave you in awe, which demonstrates why Aussie farmers are some of the best in the world. Go on a Goondiwindi Cotton Tour to find out the truth behind this industry and how it has been transformed. You’ll learn how they use less water than ever before and capitalise on every precious drop. See for yourself how it’s…

silo art trail

G’day fellow vanners, Late last year we planned a trip to Yackandandah and Echuca. While at Yackandandah, we met up with some friends who came from Echuca, knowing that we were thinking of extending our trip to drive along the Murray towards Swan Hill. It was suggested that we detour back to Melbourne via the Silo Art Trail. With a little research and a few days later, we were there, and what a detour it proved to be! The local council has now produced a pamphlet/brochure on the Victorian Silo Art Trail which even identifies the local caravan parks and free camping areas. Some fantastic modern art that gives more reasons to visit this beautiful part of Victoria. To finish the trip, we had a couple of nights at Warburtons Bridge,…

warm welcoming

Hi Fred, Attached is a photograph of our rig at Smythesdale Gardens Rest Area, about 20km’s from Ballarat in Victoria. As can be seen, there is plenty of room between campers and this was one site where there was no rubbish to collect. Although there are hot showers and toilets, only a donation was requested at the time we stayed. It was also a place where one of the things we like about free camping occurred. It was late afternoon when we arrived, and while busy setting up the van for the night, a fellow free camper came up, introduced herself, pointed to a group enjoying happy hour about 300 metres away, and requested that we join them. We haven’t had a welcoming like that happen in a caravan park. Here we…
