caravan wants & needs

I still love caravan and camping shows and discovering new additions to modern caravans through design, manufacture, suspensions, colour schemes and internal designs. Like everyone, I’m also looking for a well-made and strong caravan for Aussie conditions that won’t destroy my budget. I often meet other RVers, or those planning for a freedom lifestyle with a caravan or motorhome when they retire, and they too have plenty of questions to ask. However, from experience and being able to tow different manufacturers’ caravans for more than 8 years, and tens of thousands of km’s, I tend to focus on the function rather than fancy editions, which are appealing, but may not be necessary. We are so lucky nowadays to be able, within reason, to ask caravan manufacturers to change colours, move interiors around,…

keep these areas pristine

Earlier this year we visited Tamborine Mountain, which is quite beautiful and much of the area has been declared a National Park. We were amazed to discover there were no facilities available to responsibly empty our toilet cassette anywhere. Enquiries at our campsite and to the Scenic Rim Regional Council revealed the closest Dump Point was at Beaudesert Showgrounds, a 60km round trip from our campsite and we would incur a fee. We would like to warn others of the difficulties of safely and responsibly disposing of the contents of your toilet cassette while visiting the region. As it’s such a pristine and delicate environment, Council should provide better facilities, perhaps next to an existing public toilet. However, we highly recommend a few days in the area as it’s a…

australia’s highest city

Armidale sits in the New England High Country in NSW and is the highest city in Australia at 1,000 metres above sea level. This stunning city, surrounded by majestic National Parks, is 480km northwest of Sydney. Armidale boasts stunning churches, inviting parks and recreation areas, outstanding schools and a highly-respected university. A guided Heritage Bus tour departs from the Information Centre from Monday to Saturday. It’s free, has a lovely commentary from a tour guide and is a brilliant half-hour journey around the city. You have four opportunities to disembark the bus: at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre & Keeping Place, the New England Regional Art Museum, the Armidale Railway Museum or the heritage-listed Booloominbah Historic House at the University of New England. You will hear descriptions of the many beautiful buildings…

howqua hills’ high country huts

“There was movement at the station for the word had passed around…” Banjo Patterson … that the Victorian High Country is the place to go! There are dozens of huts scattered across the Australian Alps, each a piece of living history and essential shelters for alpine adventurers. The Howqua Hills historic area makes a great base for exploring some of these huts. It’s an old gold mining area on the Howqua River and is set in a beautiful, secluded valley 45-minutes south-east of Mansfield. Once busy with gold miners, it’s now popular for picnics, camping, horse riding, 4WDing and bushwalking. Camping along the Howqua River is one of the best ways to enjoy this historic area and it offers a great base for bushwalking, fishing and other activities. It’s best to bring…
