APPLE WATCH SERIES 4 GETS ECG SUPPORT The much-awaited feature of the Apple Watch Series 4, the ECG app and irregular heart rhythm notification, has finally landed with the watchOS 5.1.2 update. But the app is only available to Apple Watch Series 4 users in the US and its territories. Apple requires regulatory approvals in all the regions before rolling out its ECG app. Changing the Apple Watch or iPhone’s region does not enable the app outside of the US. For the US, Apple has worked with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a number of years to receive De Novo classification, to make the features available over the counter. “With the release of these heart features, Apple Watch takes the next step in empowering people with more information about their…

be smart, buy smart

BLACK FRIDAY and Cyber Monday had come and gone, but did you manage to grab the best entertainment deals? Delhi-based executive Garima Kapoor, a television buff who is rarely happy with the content dished out by local channels, decided to take the plunge and invest in a smart TV this time. She is not a techie, of course, but quite familiar with the term Android operating system (OS), and had no trouble purchasing a TV running on the mobile version of that OS. By doing so, Kapoor hoped to access the latest apps for content streaming. Unfortunately, she has ended up with a not-so-smart TV and is planning to add a streaming dongle. This is not a one-off incident, though, and many have suffered a similar fate. “The right kind of…

best just got better

Apple took its own sweet time to come up with its first smartwatch in 2015. But since then, there has been no looking back. In such a short span of time, Apple has improvised its watch many folds. From just tracking step count, measuring heart rate and notifying about the incoming calls and emails, Apple Watch has emerged as a holistic smartwatch. But before we jump on to the functionality, let’s talk about the design first. Design: This year’s watch has been redesigned inside out. It is sleek and features a 30 per cent larger display with curved corners. The 38mm watch has been replaced with a slightly bigger 40mm and the 42mm with 44mm. With the previous generation Apple Watch, I always found 38mm to be a little small and 42mm…

close surveillance

Xiaomi has mastered the art of making great products with minimalistic design and this 360˚ surveillance camera is no exception. The compact gadget weighs 239g, is barely 118 mm tall and 78 mm wide, and done in pristine white-and-black, blends perfectly with any modern décor. It can be mounted on a flat surface such as a table or a shelf, or you can put it upside down on the ceiling, using the accompanying bracket. But there is one drawback. In spite of a shockproof design, the lack of waterproofing eliminates outdoor usage. To set up the camera, all I had to do was switch on the power and follow the instructions on the Mi Home app. Xiaomi is using its India server for this gadget and the same must be selected…
