all the world’s a stage

Obviously, I’m exaggerating but it did seem like the entirety of Asia’s finest golf courses were stationed at one place in Takashimaya Square, at the mega mall’s basement atrium where the biggest fairs had traditionally been held. But this was the first time a golf fair appeared and for four days over March 21 to 24, it seemed like all the golfers in the country had dropped by for a look-see. It just goes to show that golfers are a special breed and that when the proverbial horn calls, they will come. Split into five main country sections – Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and new entrants, China, there was also the latest golfing gear from Takashimaya’s golf section on level four of the premium Japanese shopping centre. Then there’s Royal Brunei Airlines showcasing…

elevated par 3s

1. 16TH HOLE, STADIUM COURSE, TPC SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA This par 3 may not have the most elevated of teeboxes but has rightly earned its title as the most iconic hole of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. As the only fully-enclosed golf hole in the PGA Tour, the 16th is easily one of the hardest holes on tour with the added pressure, and noise, of over 20,000 spectators watching from the grandstands. 2. 6TH HOLE, QUINTERO GOLF CLUB, ARIZONA With a 110-foot drop from teebox to green, the 6th is one of four challenging par 3s of the Rees Jones-designed course. The once private-turned-public golf course may not be the most welcoming to newcomers of the sport but nonetheless, avid golfers will have a great time tackling the 7,208-yard desert course. 3. 7TH HOLE, PEBBLE BEACH GOLF…

the people’s champion

So it wasn’t the prettiest of wins for Rickie Fowler. Starting the final round with a four-shot lead, Fowler’s advantage quickly diminished with a double bogey on the 5th, followed by a triple bogey on the 11th. But not all hope was lost, knuckling down with birdies on the 15th and 17th to end the round with a 3-over 74 and the title of the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open champion. With this win came another title of a different nature. Fowler has become the first player since 1983 to win with a double and triple bogey in the final round. However, at the end of the day, a win is still a win. And a well-deserved one for the 30-year-old, ending a two-year drought and securing his fifth PGA Tour victory. WHAT’S IN HIS…

scott hend roars to play-off win

Late on March 24, Australia’s Scott Hend returned to winning ways by clinching his first Asian Tour title since 2016 with his dramatic play-off victory over Spain’s Nacho Elvira at the Maybank Championship on Sunday at the Palm Course at Saujana Golf Club. Hend held a slender one-shot lead heading into the final hole of this US$3 million European Tour co-sanctioned tournament, but late drama ensued when a clap of thunder disrupted Elvira’s approach into the 18th green. The skies opened soon after, leaving officials with no choice but to suspend play at 2.49pm. When play resumed at 4.30pm, Elvira drained a monstrous 30-feet birdie putt to force a play-off with Hend, who had no answer to the Spaniard’s remarkable birdie effort. “What a putt by Nacho. If I was to go out…
