thanks & farewell

On March 14 Marian Sulzberger Heiskell passed away at age 100. She was well-known for her philanthropy, but she also made history with a simple idea in the early 1970s. According to Landon Jones, the managing editor of People from 1989 to 1997, she was the one who suggested to her husband, Time Inc. chairman Andrew Heiskell, that Time magazine’s popular People page be spun off into its own magazine. Founding editor Dick Stolley brilliantly made that idea a reality in 1974. His magazine about “ordinary people doing extraordinary things, and extraordinary people doing ordinary things” humanized celebrities, honored everyday heroes and celebrated America’s great variety of life. Nearly a half century later People is a multi-platform juggernaut with an audience of 100 million. From the age of 8, I was…

game of thrones lucky to be alive after stroke

Emilia Clarke, who plays the strong-willed Daenerys Targaryen on the HBO megahit Game of Thrones, is opening up about a terrifying health crisis that nearly killed her. The British actress, 32, wrote in The New Yorker that she collapsed at the gym in 2011 and felt “as though an elastic band were squeezing my brain.” An MRI revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of stroke caused by bleeding around the brain, after an arterial rupture. “I later learned about a third of SAH patients die immediately or soon thereafter,” she wrote. After three painful brain surgeries and two monthlong hospital stays, Clarke says she’s finally healthy and ready for life after Thrones. She wrote, “I’m so happy to be here to see the end of this…
