DECEMBER saw significant changes on two of our major main line operations, as LNER brought to a close more than four decades of HST operation on the East Coast route and Virgin Trains gave way to Avanti on the West Coast after 22 years in charge. There has been a mixed reaction to Virgin going, as not everyone is a fan of the ‘Pendolino’ and ‘Voyager’ trainsets introduced during its time. new dawn for west coast as avanti begins

THE new West Coast Partnership consortium of First Group and Trenitalia has chosen the Italian word ‘Avanti’ as the brand name for its Intercity services out of Euston to the Midlands, North Wales, Northern England and Scotland. ‘Avanti’ is the Italian word for ‘forward’ or ‘let’s go’, and the branding includes a triangle that represents connecting England, Wales and Scotland. The consortium started running services on December 8, although the official launch at Euston was the following day with a special 1Z17/10.33 to Glasgow Central formed of reliveried ‘Pendolino’ No. 390156, which was named (in vinyl) Pride and Prosperity before departure. A REPORT commissioned by the Consortium of East Coast Main Line Authorities (ECMA), which is made up of the Combined City Authorities and Councils served by train services on the route, has calculated that 12 major incidents in 2018 that saw the loss of train services for a full day had an economic cost of £46 million. The importance of the East Coast route is demonstrated by statistics that show a third of Britain’s population live within 20 minutes of one of its stations, covering an area that generates 41% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. As a result, the ECMA consortium has called on the UK and Scottish Governments to invest in measures that bring greater resilience, suggesting that halving cancellations and delays over 10 minutes would be worth £63…

VIRGIN Trains was launched as one of the original franchisees of the privatised railway in 1997. Although it lost CrossCountry to Arriva in 2007, Virgin and Stagecoach held on to the West Coast franchise for 22 years – the longest in the privatised era so far, and nearly as long as the ‘Big Four’ companies from 1923-1948. During that time it has introduced a number of innovations, including the 125mph tilting ‘Pendolino’ Class 390s (2004); a high frequency timetable (2008); longer trains to cope with increased demand (2012); and hourly services between Euston and Scotland (2013). dft reveals pipeline for new projects

NETWORK Rail’s budget for Control Period 6(2019-2024) includes £10.5 billion for enhancement projects, but it is only recently that the Department for Transport has published how projects bidding for funding will be organised. There are now four distinct authority phases, beginning with a ‘decision to initiate’ that unlocks funding to undertake a ‘Strategic Outline Business Case’ (SOBC). If the SOBC is accepted, work on an agreed development plan can then take place, and if that is approved it goes forward to detailed planning before finally entering the ‘delivery’ phase. There are currently 58 initiatives in England and Wales at different phases of the pipeline, which include new stations and services plus improved track and signalling to allow more services to run. major award for group behind the restoration of test car 2

THE Quorn Wagon and Wagon group is to be recognised in February’s Heritage Railway Associated Awards 2020 for its work restoring the former departmental vehicle Test Car 2 (see last issue for our in-depth article on the project). The group will receive the Modern traction award, which is sponsored by Rail Express.
