Sistawood placemat set DESIGNERS: Patricia Sporle & Jacqui Anderson Based in the small town of Nagambie in rural Victoria, sisters Patricia and Jacqui started their brand two years ago in the backyard shed. “With sawdust in our hair and wood shavings in our boots, we developed a whole new appreciation for power tools,” says Patricia. “We started with succulent planters, our original product. We received some requests for custom placemats and decided to start a tableware range.” Made from marine-grade plywood and a two-part resin coating, each set is made to order. “It takes three weeks for the resin to completely cure,” she says. “Anyone who works with resin will know this stuff ain’t easy!” Each placemat set is lightly sanded, taped, hand-painted, sanded again, sealed with resin and finished…

When architects Yun Nie Chong (from Nie + Co Architects) and Patrick Kosky stumbled across a vacant 250-square-metre block in the heart of Western Australia’s Fremantle area, they weren’t concerned with its small size. The husband and wife, along with their two young daughters, already lived in the port precinct and loved its grungy, industrial vibe. Rather than seeing limitations in the small block, they saw an opportunity to turn it into a spacious family home. The home was only half inspired by the site’s size. Fremantle’s unique flavour – with its warehouses, workers’ cottages and maritime infrastructure – was equally influential. “We’ve used a lot of recycled brick and tin,” says Patrick, with Yun Nie adding, “We quite like raw material, too, so we added timber to create warmth…
