FORMER President Jacob Zuma has filed a new application to arms deal trial Judge Nkosinathi Chili, asking for State advocate Billy Downer to be removed from the trial when the matter is heard in August. Zuma’s new application for Downer’s removal, is based primarily on the fact that the former president is seeking to privately prosecute Downer for breaching the National Prosecuting Authority Act for allegedly sanctioning the leaking of confidential medical information in 2021 to News24 journalist Karyn Maughan. My late cousin who lived in Marondera, Zimbabwe, used to say that on a good day they might have six hours of water and electricity. Otherwise, there were periods of three days when one or both necessities were not available. Since March 9, there have been seven occasions when water has not been available for anything: from three hours to over 20 hours in the Grosvenor section of the Bluff. But those experiences have been eclipsed by five days of no water since April 12, with still no certainty as at April 17 when flow will be re-established. Former SA Revenue Service (Sars) operational manager Bayanda Mehlala will be back in court again later this month on charges including contravening the Tax Administration Act. WITH signs pointing towards the likelihood of imported cases of cholera leading to the local transmission of the bacteria through contaminated water supplies, calls have been made for heightened surveillance of Gauteng’s water supplies. Even though cholera is not endemic to South Africa, since February 5 there have been at least 10 confirmed cases of the illness and one death in the province reported by provincial health authorities. At the time, no other cases of cholera were reported in any other provinces. While the number of cases has yet to increase in the province, concerns have been raised about the safety of the province’s water supply in the light of the continued existence of the illness. Two key posts in the City are vacant, the head of metro police and the position of deputy city manager (DCM) for Economic Development and Planning. Acting head of metro police Sbonelo Mchunu is among the front-runners for the post, which became vacant after the retirement of Steve Middleton in January. The world has a huge waste problem. Globally, about 2 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste are generated annually. In 2017 alone, South Africa generated an estimated 55.6 million tonnes of general waste. Municipal solid waste contributed 23.1 million tonnes, and it is estimated that one third of municipal solid waste is made up of food waste. A 2021 study on food waste in South Africa by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, indicates that around 10 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually. This equates to one-third of the 31 million tonnes of food produced for worldwide human consumption annually. PYONGYANG: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended a ceremony to mark the completion of a building project in which 10 000 housing units were constructed in Pyongyang, state media said yesterday, describing the project to supply more homes as one of the top policy priorities. SpaceX yesterday postponed the first test flight of Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, designed to send astronauts to the Moon and Mars and beyond. Lift-off of the gigantic rocket was called off just minutes ahead of the scheduled launch time because of a pressurisation issue in the booster stage, SpaceX said. SpaceX founder Elon Musk said a pressure valve appeared to be frozen, forcing a postponement of the launch which had been planned from Starbase, the SpaceX spaceport in Boca Chica, Texas. “Learned a lot today, now offloading propellant, retrying in a few days,” Musk tweeted. The national Health Department has appointed the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to conduct a due diligence check on the roll-out of solar energy to all health facilities across the country. “The proposed solar-energy programme is going to cover the roll-out of solar energy and battery storage as back-up supply to all the clinics, community heath centres, hospitals, emergency medical centres and the forensic laboratories. “The objective of the exercise by CSIR is to identify the required critical consumption for critical areas of each health facility so that the department can be able to compile a comprehensive business case that will assist the department in justifying for the required budget,” Health Minister Joe Phaahla said. A CEREMONY will be held this week to seal the National Union of Metalworkers of SA’s (Numsa’s) acceptance of a 7% wage increase with employers in the bus sector. This follows a meeting at the National Bargaining Forum (NBF), which was set up by the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council. The one-year agreement will be implemented retrospectively from April 1 and expire on March 31 next year. The 7% increase across the board includes allowances and the minimum wage, while the outstanding issue of medical aid or medical insurance will be referred to a task team. ROME: Almost 2 tons of cocaine with a market value of more than €400 million (R7.9 billion) were found floating at sea off eastern Sicily, in what Italy’s tax and customs police yesterday called a record seizure. The drugs were stored in about 70 waterproof packages, carefully sealed, held together by fishermen’s nets and equipped with a luminous signalling device, police said, which suggest the haul was dumped at sea by a cargo ship in order for it to be recovered later. PARIS: A wildfire destroyed nearly 1 000 hectares on the French-Spanish border on Sunday and yesterday, authorities said, as parts of southern Europe remain gripped by a drought. France’s first major wildfire this season was brought under control yesterday, the Interior Ministry said. The fire spread around French villages on the Mediterranean coast, fanned by strong winds. Fire crews had managed to prevent the fire from engulfing the villages. About 300 people were evacuated. President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed into law the Electoral Amendment Bill, which provides for independent candidates to stand for election in Parliament and provincial legislatures. The bill is a sequel to the judgment by the Constitutional Court, which found in June 2020, that the Electoral Act was unconstitutional by only allowing the election to Parliament and the legislatures through membership of political parties. The bill sets out provision for objections to independent candidates; requirement for the appointment of agents by independent candidates; and a revised formula for the allocation of seats and their reallocation in the event of vacated seats, among others. Police Minister Bheki Cele has made an about-turn on filing an application to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) to fight a high court order directing the SAPS to pay the legal fees of a former apartheid-era police officer on trial for the killing of the Cosas 4. In January, the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg issued an order dismissing Cele’s application for leave to appeal last May’s judgment directing the police to pay the legal fees of Christiaan Siebert Rorich, one of the accused in the Cosas 4 matter. The son of a businessman was released three days after he was kidnapped from his father’s business premises in Krans- kop, near Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal, by a gunman on Friday, after successful hostage negotiations. KZN provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said Kranskop police were investigating a case of kidnapping. “It is alleged that a 28-year-old was at a business premises when he was allegedly kidnapped by an unknown man who was carrying a gun,” said Ngcobo. Police said the man was reunited with his family on Sunday. ANC MP Sibusiso Kula, accused of killing his wife, appeared in the Orkney Magistrate’s Court yesterday with his attorney lodging an application opposing further postponement of the matter. However, the application could not be heard as recording devices at the court had technical glitches which led to the matter being postponed. Kula, 34, is out on R50 000 bail after it was granted on appeal at the High Court in the North West. Kula had approached the high court after the Orkney Magistrate’s Court denied him bail. The BRITISH parliament’s commissioner for standards opened an investigation into Prime Minister Rishi Sunak earlier this month, according to a list of open inquiries yesterday. The matter under investigation was a “declaration of interest”. The inquiry began on April 13. A spokesperson for Sunak said the investigation was linked to his wife’s shareholding in a childcare firm. The Liberal Democrats, an opposition party, called for an investigation after media reports said Akshata Murthy was a shareholder in a company that would benefit from a government policy on funding for child care. Nairobi: A police officer accused of murdering two teenagers in 2017 pleaded not guilty to the charges yesterday, in a case that raised questions about extrajudicial killings in Kenya after video footage of the shootings went viral.
