Now that fugitives Thabo Bester, a convicted murderer and rapist, and his accomplice, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, have been “returned” to South Africa as a result of a high-level delegation travelling to Tanzania to secure their deportation, some important questions have arisen.
There were obviously substantial
costs incurred by this sortie to Tanzania to ensure the “re-capture” of Bester and co in terms of the aircraft, accommodation, food and other expenses.
While the portfolio committee’s inquiry into G4S, the company contracted by the government to secure the safety of prisons and prisoners, is on-going, and prima facie evidence clearly suggests that G4S was both negligent and criminally negligent in allowing the escape of a prisoner, will there be a civil suit instituted by government against G4S for the recovery of taxpayer…
