As this issue goes to press Hurricane Dorian is sitting over the Bahamas dealing untold damage to person and property. The images and videos coming out are harrowing and our thoughts are obviously with all those affected. We’re already hearing of yachts heading to the region packed with relief supplies. A hat tip to the great organization YachtAid Global and the owner and crew of 155ft motor yacht Loon, which is leading the first convoy to the worst-hit areas carrying aid and relief personnel. The superyacht community is at its best when responding so quickly to events such as Dorian, often arriving before the emergency services. The world’s most advanced research and expedition vessel has splashed at the Fincantieri/Vard shipyard in Tulcea, Romania. Next stop for the mammoth 600ft REV Ocean is the Brattvåg shipyard in Norway for outfitting. From there it will head to Germany for finishing touches before a late 2020/early 2021 delivery. REV Ocean, which is nearly 10ft longer than Azzam, currently the longest delivered yacht in the world, was developed with superyacht designer Espen Øino to support ocean research. With a 21,120nm range at 11 knots, this “floating think tank” will provide scientists with multiple R&D labs, a cutting-edge trawling system for harvesting krill and capturing live specimens, a moon pool to launch and recover AUVs, ROVs and submarines, and much more. Enticing new wealth to yachting has become a priority for the Monaco Yacht Show after 29 years of impressive growth in terms of the number and size of yachts. “The show has grown tremendously and the number of yachts at anchor is incredible,” says Maarten Ten Holter from Fraser, which was showing the first Amels 220, Aurora Borealis, and 164ft sailing yacht All About U 2 among 125 other boats packed into Port Hercules. In 1956, one of Hollywood’s brightest stars embraced the leading role of princess. In the following years, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III welcomed Tinseltown to the Principality of Monaco. Kirk Douglas was among their roll call of glamorous guests, but on this occasion, in 1965, Douglas and his wife, Anne Buydens, stayed aboard the classic yacht Malahne, docked in Port Hercules. Sam Spiegel, the Academy Award-winning producer of The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, owned the classic yacht from 1960 to 1983 and made it an essential part of the Hollywood story for two decades.
