‘South Africa exports a lot of leather,’ says VANA founder Vanashree Singh, ‘and we have great tanneries being used by international brands.’ It seemed only logical to the Durban Fashion Week founder that a local label should make use of these premium leathers. To that end, she launched her own African-rooted brand five years ago. With Vanashree designing the bags herself, and the artisanal, handcrafted products being manufactured locally, VANA maintains an authenticAfrican DNA. However,Vanashree admits that the ‘made in South Africa’ descriptor has been perceived as incongruous with her top-end line. ‘This needs to change,’ she says, ‘because we’re very much on par with places like Italy and France, and we have equal craftsmanship, skills and expertise.’ The ostrich, crocodile and python skins VANA uses are certified by the Convention on…

‘Impermanence, and the beauty that comes with ageing, are concepts that appear throughout the work’ MATT SLATER ‘At the core of my work is the Japanese idea of wabi-sabi. Its aesthetics comprise characteristics such as asymmetry, irregularity, roughness, minimalism, modesty, intimacy and seeing value in the integrity of natural entities and processes. Impermanence, the acceptance of transience, and the beauty that comes with the process of ageing are also concepts that appear throughout the work. ‘The workflow I use is intuition based and very process driven. I enjoy experimenting with different techniques and materials. Working in the darkroom allows the process to be meditative in a way, and by using various techniques and alternative printing methods, the work opens itself up to “flaws” and irregularities. ‘I usually work in cycles. For example, I…
