from the editor

I am, unapologetically, a #PlantParent. I say unapologetically not because I’m a millennial who’ll find any opportunity to mention – mid-conversation – how particularly verdant my bird’s eye chili is looking (grown from seed, no less) but because the journey from sow to reap is not always an easy win. I’ve buried enough Thai basil to learn one thing: It’s tough out there, even if you’re an indoor herb. Fortunately, Gardens Editor Heidi Bertish has a plan for us all. In Land of Plenty, she weaves together the origin story of a Constantia vegetable garden, with brilliant intel on planting a veritable feast in your backyard (or on your balcony). And it’s not just vegetables, but Instagramapproved edible flowers, too. It’s also that time of year when living becomes decidedly alfresco,…

love thy neighbour

GOOD Cape Town Sustainability is at the core of everything that goes down at Good, making even the most indulgent visits a guilt-free affair From bars and eateries to apparel and even a co-working space and yoga studio, there seems to be almost no reason to ever set foot outside of Good, the latest in Cape Town’s achingly cool developments in the Woodstock neighbourhood. Wellness is top of mind, with the minimalist-chic interiors offering decluttered spaces conducive to weekdays spent quietly working (a Mecca for the city’s ever-expanding freelancer community), and weekends whiled away sampling one or more of the low-impact, high-flavour food offerings (there’s a wine and insect pairing for more adventurous palates) and testing out the selection of artisanal cocktails. Sustainability is at the core of everything that goes down at…

catch me outside

Wood works Wood makes for beautiful outdoor furniture, but you need to be very selective about the pieces you invest in to ensure you don’t end up with dull, sun-damaged surfaces over time. Teak is by far the superior choice. The tropical hardwood can withstand harsh UV rays and is resistant to water and chlorine. To care for it, you need only periodically wash the wood with a soft-bristle brush, and polish with a teak treatment to retain shine. A Soft Landing You want comfortable, statement outdoor furniture, but you also need to consider durability, weather-resistance and maintenance. Soft furnishings are the most challenging area in which to marry these two sets of demands. Choose items stuffed with a quick-drying foam filling, and covered in a fabric made of polyester (mostly water-resistant and…
